Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is of huge importance, resulting in over 1 million deaths each year. Here, we describe how a new drug, enmetazobactam, designed to help fight resistant bacterial diseases, inhibits a key enzyme (GES‐1) responsible for AMR. Our data show it is a more potent inhibitor than the related tazobactam, with high‐level computation

Phenol degradation using 20, 300 and 520 kHz ultrasonic reactors with hydrogen peroxide, ozone and zero valent metals [PDF]
The extent of phenol degradation by the advanced oxidation process in the presence of zero valent iron (ZVI) and zero valent copper (ZVC) was studied using 20, 300 and 520 kHz ultrasonic (US) reactors.

Problem-Solving Exercise for Undergraduate Students Involving the Japanese Fermented Food Natto
Natto is a traditional Japanese food made from soybeans fermented by Bacillus subtilis natto. Because natto is high in protein and contains healthful bacteria, dieticians and producers have campaigned for higher consumption of natto in areas such as ...

Angiotensin II (AngII), a neuropeptide, interacts with amyloid‐β (Aβ), a key player in Alzheimer's disease. This study reveals that AngII reduces Aβ aggregation and membrane disruption in vitro. Biophysical assays and molecular modeling suggest AngII binds disordered Aβ forms, potentially modulating early amyloidogenic events and contributing to ...

Atovaquone is an antimalarial requiring potentiation for sufficient efficacy. We pursued strategies to enhance its activity, showing that 4‐nitrobenzoate inhibits 4‐hydroxybenzoate polyprenyltransferase, decreasing ubiquinone biosynthesis. Since atovaquone competes with ubiquinol in mitochondria, 4‐nitrobenzoate facilitates its action, potentiating ...

The kinematics and morphology of NGC 520
New long-slit optical spectroscopy and optical and NIR images of NGC 520 are presented. Velocity-dispersion and radial-velocity profiles are obtained from the spectra with the Fourier quotient and cross-correlation techniques. At the NW optical emission peak, a sharp rise in the velocity dispersions implies a concentration of mass.
