Super‐Tough Silk: The Potential of Knots in Evolved Spiders

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 15, April 10, 2025.
The toughness of spider silk can be further significantly enhanced if spiders evolved the –currently absent/undiscovered– ability to tie knots in their silk. The results on 393 spiders suggest toughness increments by one or two orders of magnitude and thus a new perspective on how knotting can serve as a key innovation in spider evolution and in ...

Management of Glaucoma in the Maltese Health Service [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Glaucoma is a disease with characteristic changes of the optic nerve, visual field and raised intra ocular pressure. Its prevalence varies between, 1.6 to 8% and is dependent on the ethnic composition of the population and it is one of the leading causes

Engineered Peptides‐Based Hybrid‐Nested Microneedle Effectively Treat Biofilm‐Infected Diabetic Wounds

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid‐nested microneedle/cryogel scaffold (MQW‐CMg‐MOF) is designed for efficient biofilm removal and accelerated healing of diabetic wounds. The scaffold shows substantial biofilm removal in vitro and in a preclinical diabetic swine biofilm‐infected wound model compared to the control.

The Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS) I. A 570 square degree Mini-Survey around the North Ecliptic Pole ?

open access: yes, 1997
The Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS) is a low-frequency radio survey that will cover the whole sky north of delta = 30 degrees at a wavelength of 92 cm to a limiting flux density of approximately 18 mJy (5 sigma(rms)).

Rigid Fluorescent Indacenetetraone‐Based Semiconducting Polymers via Knoevenagel Condensation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
New donor–acceptor polymers prepared by Knoevenagel condensation of indacenedithiophene‐ and indacenedifuran‐based aldehydes reveal an exceptionally rigid backbone, which is manifested in the remarkably narrow absorption and emission bands in red to near‐infrared region.

Intramolecular Down‐ and Up‐Conversion in Dimeric Tetracene Complexes Centered via Platinum(II) and Palladium(II)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Metal‐tetracene dimeric complexes are synthesized through the pyridyl coordination to either Pt(II) or Pd(II). Photophysical properties are systematically compared as a function of the metal using steady‐state and time‐resolved spectroscopy. The Pt(II) dimer exhibits efficient intramolecular singlet fission and subsequent intramolecular up‐conversion ...
