Sociology and The Complexity of What Is Missing

open access: yesThe British Journal of Sociology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT What is ‘missed’ by sociological literature underpinned by assumptions of presence that a missing approach can rectify? I appropriate a metaphysics of presence and an alternative focus on what is missing as ontological foci to revisit complexity studies in sociology.

Dealing With Inbuilt Age: A Bayesian Approach to Radiocarbon Dating of Rice, Bamboo and Charcoal From Non Ban Jak, Thailand

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT New radiocarbon determinations from rice grains and bamboo have been obtained from Non Ban Jak, Northeast Thailand. These, along with charcoal, date a late Iron Age building sequence. The results come from short‐lived species and charcoal with potential inbuilt age. We built a series of Bayesian models to obtain a reliable chronology.

A Bayes factor framework for unified parameter estimation and hypothesis testing

open access: yesBritish Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Bayes factor, the data‐based updating factor of the prior to posterior odds of two hypotheses, is a natural measure of statistical evidence for one hypothesis over the other. We show how Bayes factors can also be used for parameter estimation.

How do ecologists estimate occupancy in practice?

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Over 20 years ago, ecologists were introduced to the site occupancy model (SOM) for estimating occupancy rates from detection‐nondetection data. In the ensuing decades, the SOM and its hierarchical modeling extensions have become mainstays of quantitative ecology, and estimating occupancy rates has become one of the most common applications of ...

An Adaptive Nonconforming Finite Element Algorithm for Laplace Eigenvalue Problem

open access: yesAbstract and Applied Analysis, 2014
We establish Crouzeix-Raviart element adaptive algorithm based on Rayleigh quotient iteration and give its a priori/a posteriori error estimates. Our algorithm is performed under the package of Chen, and satisfactory numerical results are obtained.

European CH4 inversions with ICON-ART coupled to the CarbonTracker Data Assimilation Shell [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics
We present the first application of the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic model with Aerosols and Reactive Trace gases (ICON-ART) in inverse modeling in inverse modeling of greenhouse gas fluxes with an ensemble Kalman smoother.

A priori Wannier functions from modified Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham equations

open access: yes, 2007
The Hartree-Fock equations are modified to directly yield Wannier functions following a proposal of Shukla et al. [Chem. Phys. Lett. 262, 213-218 (1996)].

Experience and reasoning: challenging the a priori/a posteriori distinction

open access: yesSynthese, 2018
Williamson and others have recently argued against the significance of the a priori/a posteriori distinction. My aim in this paper is to explain, defend, and expand upon one of these arguments. In the first section, I develop in some detail a line of argument sketched in Williamson (The philosophy of philosophy, Blackwell Publishing, Oxford, 2007).

Kant's Solution to the Trilemma of Concept Formation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.
Abstract According to a widespread assumption, Kant's logical account of concept formation starts with comparison, where the latter involves concepts. On this assumption, the formation of a concept presupposes other concepts, so that the argument is threatened either by circularity, regress, or break‐off.
