The British Journal of Radiology, 2008A 59-year-old man presented acutely with generalized abdominal pain and tenderness. He was cardiovascularly stable but had an elevated white cell count of 27610 l and a C-reactive protein of 250 mg l. His biochemistry showed a degree of metabolic acidosis and dehydration, and he had been previously fit and well.

The challenge is to treat the majority of children with self-limiting but benign conditions and to swiftly identify and treat the child with an uncommon but potentially life-threatening cause of pain.
