ANTIBIOTICS FOR THE ACUTE ABDOMEN
Surgical Clinics of North America, 1997Antibiotics are only an adjunct to proper surgical therapy for the treatment of the acute abdomen associated with bacterial secondary peritonitis. Hospital Medicine, 2004
A large proportion of children assessed in hospital with abdominal pain will leave with no definitive diagnosis. The challenge is to treat the majority of children with self-limiting but benign conditions and to swiftly identify and treat the child with an uncommon but potentially life-threatening cause of pain.

Ultrasound in the acute abdomen
British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2008Ultrasound is widely used as the first-line imaging modality in the assessment of the acute abdomen and in trauma (Marincek, 2002). Ultrasound has the advantages of low cost, real-time bedside imaging, accessibility, portability, lack of ionizing radiation, noninvasiveness, and multiplanar imaging.

An acute abdomen — with a twist
The British Journal of Radiology, 2008A 59-year-old man presented acutely with generalized abdominal pain and tenderness. He was cardiovascularly stable but had an elevated white cell count of 27610 l and a C-reactive protein of 250 mg l. The present study aims at establishing the exact role and limitation of ultrasound in pediatric acute abdomen.Fifty children less than 14 years of age presenting with acute abdomen were evaluated by US and other imaging modalities. The mean age of presentation was 3 1/2 years. Maximum number of cases were seen in less than two years of age.
