Command Interneurons in the Crayfish Central Nervous System [PDF]

open access: yes, 1967
The motor effects evoked by stimulation of each of eight command fibres in the circumoesophageal commissures of the crayfish are described. The fibres obtained appeared to have widespread connexions in all or most of the lower ganglia. For certain fibres

Metamaterial Antennas Enhance MRI of the Eye and Occipital Brain

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A radiofrequency antenna platform comprising planar and bend configurations is developed, incorporating structurally integrated epsilon‐negative metamaterial unit cells to enhance MRI. These antennas enable high‐resolution in vivo human MRI of the eye, orbit, and occipital brain. Comprehensive validation, including simulations, phantom experiments, SAR,

Is abdominal hollowing exercise using real-time ultrasound imaging feedback helpful for selective strengthening of the transversus abdominis muscle?

open access: yesMedicine, 2018
Despite the importance of strengthening of the transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle in individuals with low back pain, the effect of real-time ultrasound imaging on maintenance in selective strengthening of abdominal hallowing exercise (AHE) performance ...

TGFβ (transforming growth factor-β) blockade induces a human-like disease in a nondissecting mouse model of abdominal aortic aneurysm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Objective-Current experimental models of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) do not accurately reproduce the major features of human AAA. We hypothesized that blockade of TGF beta (transforming growth factor-beta) activity-a guardian of vascular integrity ...

Auditory–Tactile Congruence for Synthesis of Adaptive Pain Expressions in RoboPatients

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this work, we explore auditory–tactile congruence for synthesizing adaptive vocal pain expressions in robopatients. Using a robopatient platform that integrates vocal pain sounds with palpation forces, we conducted 7680 trials across 20 participants.

Stable pelvic floor muscle training improves urinary incontinence in women with gestational diabetes mellitus

open access: yesJournal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common metabolic disease that contributes to urinary incontinence (UI) in pregnant women. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic potential of stable pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training ...

Does Abdominal Obesity Accelerate Muscle Strength Decline in Older Adults? Evidence From the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

open access: yesThe journals of gerontology. Series A, Biological sciences and medical sciences, 2018
Background Cross-sectional evidence has shown an association between abdominal obesity and lower muscle strength in older adults. However, no longitudinal findings have confirmed this association. In addition, the impact of abdominal fat on the reduction

Temporal and Cell‐Specific Regulation of Synaptic Homeostasis by the Chromatin Remodeler Chd1

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Chd1, the Drosophila homologue of mammalian CHD2 ‐ a gene linked to autism, epilepsy, and intellectual disability, is required for synaptic homeostatic plasticity. Chd1 in glia is necessary for the rapid induction of synaptic homeostasis, whereas Chd1 in motoneurons, muscle, and glia is critical for long‐term maintenance.

Abdominal LIPUS ameliorates simulated microgravity induced skeletal muscle atrophy via the gut-muscle axis

open access: yesnpj Microgravity
Study investigated if abdominal low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) alleviates simulated microgravity (hindlimb unloading, HU)-induced skeletal muscle atrophy by restoring gut microbiota.
