Determinants of treatment and outcomes of diverticular abscesses

open access: yesWorld Journal of Emergency Surgery, 2019
Background Diverticular abscess diameter of 3–6 cm is generally accepted as a cutoff determining whether percutaneous drainage is recommended in addition to antibiotics, but this is not based on high-quality evidence. The aim of this study was to analyze

Patient-specific simulation of stent-graft deployment within an abdominal aortic aneurysm [PDF]

open access: yes3rd International Conference on Computational and Mathematical Biomedical Engineering, 16 au 18 d\'ecembre 2013, Hong Kong, Kowloon Hong Kong : Hong Kong (2013), 2014
In this study, finite element analysis is used to simulate the surgical deployment procedure of a bifurcated stent-graft on a real patient's arterial geometry. The stent-graft is modeled using realistic constitutive properties for both the stent and most importantly for the graft. The arterial geometry is obtained from pre-operative imaging exam.

Ultrasound‐Assisted H2 Transmitter Enables Hydrogen‐Gene Therapy to Prevent Anesthesia/Surgery‐Induced Cognitive Impairment

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) remains a challenge with no effective treatments. This study introduces a novel hydrogen‐gene therapy strategy, combining focused ultrasound and siRNA delivery via hydrogen emitters, to repair neuroinflammation in a precise and controlled manner.

Machine learning for temporary stoma after intestinal resection in surgical decision-making of Crohn’s disease

open access: yesBMC Gastroenterology
Background Crohn’s disease (CD) often necessitates surgical intervention, with temporary stoma creation after intestinal resection (IR) being a crucial decision.

Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis Liver Abscess after Blunt Abdominal Trauma

open access: yesBalkan Medical Journal, 2017
Background: Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis is among the most reported serotypes of Salmonella species worldwide, but is rarely reported as the causative agent of a liver abscess. Case Report: We present a patient with an abdominal blunt trauma.

Ensemble Prediction of Time to Event Outcomes with Competing Risks: A Case Study of Surgical Complications in Crohn's Disease [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
We develop a novel algorithm to predict the occurrence of major abdominal surgery within 5 years following Crohn's disease diagnosis using a panel of 29 baseline covariates from the Swedish population registers. We model pseudo-observations based on the Aalen-Johansen estimator of the cause-specific cumulative incidence with an ensemble of modern ...

SENP3 Drives Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Development by Regulating Ferroptosis via De‐SUMOylation of CTH

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this study, it is proposed that SENP3 accumulates in macrophages of aneurysmal aortic tissues, which promotes macrophage ferroptosis and inflammation via regulation of CTH de‐SUMOylation. Abstract Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a high‐risk inflammatory disorder. SENP3, a SUMO2/3‐specific protease, is closely involved in the development of cancer.

Closing the Gap between Deep and Conventional Image Registration using Probabilistic Dense Displacement Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Nonlinear image registration continues to be a fundamentally important tool in medical image analysis. Diagnostic tasks, image-guided surgery and radiotherapy as well as motion analysis all rely heavily on accurate intra-patient alignment. Furthermore, inter-patient registration enables atlas-based segmentation or landmark localisation and shape ...
