Changes in efflux pump activity of Clostridium beijerinckii throughout ABE fermentation
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2021Pumping toxic substances through a cytoplasmic membrane by protein transporters known as efflux pumps represents one bacterial mechanism involved in the stress response to the presence of toxic compounds. The active efflux might also take part in exporting low-molecular-weight alcohols produced by intrinsic cell metabolism; in the case of solventogenic

Simultaneous Fermentation and Separation in the Ethanol and Abe Fermentation
Separation and Purification Methods, 1992Abstract Simultaneous separation of solvent products during fermentation reduces product inhibition and increases reactor productivity. Separation techniques used for simultaneous extraction during ethanol fermentation and butanol-acetone fermentation are reviewed.

Mathematical models of ABE fermentation: review and analysis
Critical Reviews in Biotechnology, 2012Among different liquid biofuels that have emerged in the recent past, biobutanol produced via fermentation processes is of special interest due to very similar properties to that of gasoline. For an effective design, scale-up, and optimization of the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation process, it is necessary to have insight into the micro- and

ABE fermentation products recovery methods—A review
Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2015Abstract Butanol has a great potential as a biofuel and to date a lot of research has been done both in terms of more efficient butanol production as well as in developing product recovery methods. Many of them deal with separation techniques which can be used for selective recovery of acetone, n-butanol and ethanol from model solutions and ...

Investigation of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation by fluorescence
Journal of Fluorescence, 1994Photophysical techniques have potential for the development of optical sensors in monitoring and controlling fermentors. In the particular case of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation, carried out by bacteria of the speciesClostridium acetobutylicum, we have developed two studies based on fluorescence spectroscopy.

Recent advances in butanol production by acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation
Biomass and Bioenergy, 2021Abstract Butanol can be produced from renewable sources via the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation route to create biobutanol or from fossil fuel to create petrobutanol. Despite the similar chemical properties of these two forms of butanol, the market penetration of biobutanol is still hindered due to its higher production costs compared to ...

Application of novel technology to the abe fermentation process
Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 1992Traditional technology for ABE production and recovery does not allow an economic process. However, use of a fluidized-bed reactor using immobilized cells in a continuous fermentation process, coupled with product removal and concentration by a membrane process, is a viable option.

ABE fermentation from enzymatic hydrolysate of NaOH-pretreated corncobs
Biomass and Bioenergy, 2014Abstract Acetone butanol ethanol (ABE) was produced from enzymatic-hydrolyzed corncobs by Clostridium saccharobutylicum DSM 13864. Pretreatment of corncobs was carried out with 0.5 mol L−1 NaOH followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. The yield of total reducing sugars was 917 g kg−1 pretreated (de-lignified) and washed corncobs.

Competitive Adsorption of Butanol from ABE Fermentation Solution by Silicalite-1
Materials Science Forum, 2023Biobutanol is an alternative energy that has been of great interest as a substitute for fossil fuel. It can be obtained from acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation with by-products of acetone and ethanol. In this work, the competitive kinetics of adsorption of butanol from ABE model solution was investigated on Silicalite-1 comparing to commercial ...

Pervaporative stripping of acetone, butanol and ethanol to improve ABE fermentation
Bioseparation, 2000Acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation by anaerobic bacterium C. acetobutylicum is a potential source for feedstock chemicals. The problem of product induced inhibition makes this fermentation economically infeasible. Pervaporation is studied as an effective separation technique to remove the toxic inhibitory products.
