Diamond Abrasive Electroplated Surface Anomaly Detection using Convolutional Neural Networks for Industrial Quality Inspection [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Electroplated diamond abrasive tools require nickel coating on a metal surface for abrasive bonding and part functionality. The electroplated nickel-coated abrasive tool is expected to have a high-quality part performance by having a nickel coating thickness of between 50% to 60% of the abrasive median diameter, uniformity of the nickel layer, abrasive

A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

Material Challenges and Alloy Selection for Particle/s‐CO2 Heat Exchangers in Concentrated Solar Power Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Combining supercritical CO2 (s‐CO2) cycles with particle‐based heat transfer media holds great potential in concentrated solar power plants but poses enormous material challenges. The particle/s‐CO2 heat exchanger must withstand extreme conditions, including high temperatures, pressures, CO2 corrosion, and erosion.
