Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Exploring Suitable Nitrification Inhibitor in an Intensively Cultivated Greenhouse Soil and Its Effect on the Abundance and Community of Soil Ammonia Oxidizers

open access: yesAgronomy
The application of nitrification inhibitors (NIs) is an effective way to reduce soil nitrogen (N) losses and increase crop N uptake. Yet, the efficacy of NIs commonly varies with dosages, crop systems and soil environmental conditions.

Blood‐based proteomic profiling reveals context‐dependent changes in BCL2‐associated signaling during taxane therapy in breast cancer patients

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemotherapy side effects significantly impact cancer survivors' quality of life. Using protein levels in blood samples from breast cancer patients before and after 12 weeks of taxane treatment, we detected treatment‐dependent changes in calcium signaling and aging pathways associated with cancer recurrence.

Significant Association Between Increased Abundance of Selected Bacterial Lipopolysaccharides and Norovirus Diarrhea Among South African Infants

open access: yesViruses
Bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) have been shown to promote enteric viral infections. This study assessed whether possessing elevated levels of LPS was associated with norovirus infection. Fecal samples from diarrheic norovirus-positive (DNP) (n = 26),

Direct evidence that density-dependent regulation underpins the temporal stability of abundant species in a diverse animal community

open access: yes, 2014
The authors thank the ERC (project no. BioTIME 250189) and the Royal Society for funding. To understand how ecosystems are structured and stabilized, and to identify when communities are at risk of damage or collapse, we need to know how the abundances of

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Designing a shipboard line transect survey to estimate cetacean abundance off the Azores Archipelago, Portugal

open access: yes, 2009
Revised version November 2008. MRes in Marine Mammal ScienceManagement schemes dedicated to the conservation of wildlife populations rely on the effective monitoring of population size, and this requires the accurate and precise estimation of abundance ...

Natural Resource Abundance and Economic Growth in a Two Country World [PDF]

open access: yes
We investigate the dynamics of nonrenewable resource abundance on economic growth and welfare in a two-country world. One country is endowed with a nonrenewable-resource, otherwise, countries are identical, except possibly for their initial endowments of
