Structured machine learning modeling to support conservation of deep‐sea benthic biodiversity

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Biodiversity monitoring programs need to deliver accurate, timely, and actionable predictions. To establish a predictive monitoring program for deep‐sea benthos of the Santos Basin, Brazil, we developed a two‐stage structured model that allowed comparison of biodiversity predictions obtained from environmental simulations (2M‐Sim).

Thoridae (Crustacea: Decapoda) can penetrate the Abyss: a new species of Lebbeus from the Sea of Okhotsk, representing the deepest record of the family

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Taxonomy, 2020
Lebbeus sokhobio sp. nov. is described from abyssal depths (3303−3366 m) in the Kuril Basin of the Sea of Okhotsk. The related congeners are deep-water dwellers with a very distant distribution and very similar morphology. The new species is separated by

UNIVERSALITY IN THE CLIMATE CATASTROPHE: RETHINKING CHAKRABARTY'S ANTHROPOCENE PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY WITH MERLEAU‐PONTY'S PHILOSOPHY OF NATURE

open access: yesHistory and Theory, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article critically examines Dipesh Chakrabarty's concept of Anthropocene history, a philosophy of history that is designed to respond to the universal challenge of the Anthropocene. It uses the work of Maurice Merleau‐Ponty to mitigate the pitfalls of Chakrabarty's concept and to propose an alternative relation between nature and history.

Heaving Induced by PDO Driving Abyssal Water Decadal Variability in the Eastern Philippine Sea

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The abyssal ocean serves as a significant heat reservoir in the Earth system, essential for regulating global energy and carbon balance. Previous studies indicate that climate modes primarily affect thermohaline conditions above 1,000 m, but their direct

Palamism Does Not Disfigure the Gospel: A Reply to Thomas Weinandy

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic Theology, EarlyView.
Abstract In a 2024 article in the IJST, Fr. Thomas Weinandy argues that the theological system of Gregory Palamas is in grave error, especially with respect to its commitment to an objective ontological distinction between God's essence and His energies. In his concluding paragraph Fr.

Antarctic meltwater spread pattern and its duration modulate abyssal circulation

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Antarctic meltwater could slow the abyssal circulation, which is essential for ventilating heat, carbon, and nutrients, thereby influencing global climate patterns and marine ecosystems.

Confirmation of hard-substrate predictions in the abyssal Vema Fracture Zone

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Hydroacoustic mapping has recently challenged the long-held view of a uniform abyssal seafloor by predicting substantial habitat heterogeneity in this environment.

Boniteza's Arts Chair, Pedagogical Curatorial Practices with Contemporary Artists as Arts‐Based Educational Research

open access: yesInternational Journal of Art &Design Education, EarlyView.
Abstract This article puts forward a new methodology in artistic education. It is based on scientific utopia as it aims for the implementation in schools of the cátedras de la Boniteza (the Boniteza's Art Chair), where an inhabiting artist changes the institution from within through the development of quality art projects.
