Reactive Power Compensation in AC Power Systems

open access: yes, 2017
This chapter introduces most widely used reactive power compensators considering the recent advances seen in industrial applications. In order to provide better and deeper knowledge for authors, the basic principles of reactive power compensation and symmetrical systems are presented primarily.

An AC-AC power converter for custom power applications

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1996
A versatile AC-AC converter that can be utilized as a control device for custom power applications is presented. The converter has the ability to regulate bus voltage through voltage sags and overvoltages, and act as a solid state circuit breaker. Performance characteristics under typical conditions are presented along with experimental verification of

A new AC/AC power converter

2017 IEEE Southern Power Electronics Conference (SPEC), 2017
The Future Electrical Network will be based on the integration of different renewable energy sources. In this regard, modular bidirectional power converter architectures will get special attention. Galvanic isolation in such power converter architectures plays a vital role in confining faults.

Direct AC/AC power converter for wind power application

Melecon 2010 - 2010 15th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference, 2010
Split drivetrain configurations with multiple generators are one of the solutions for increasing the reliability and reducing the cost of wind turbines. The split drivetrain technology gives the ability to introduce multiple generators and by that reduces the gear size and facilitates variable-speed operation.

Adaptive control of uninterruptible power supply based on AC/AC Power Converter

2014 International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems (ICMCS), 2014
This work deals with the problems of uninterruptible power supplies “UPS” based on the converter AC/AC built in two stages: an input stage AC/DC and an output stage DC/AC. The two blocks are joined by a continuous intermediate bus, such as power factor correction “PFC”, regulating the DC bus voltage and generating a sinusoidal output voltage.

Active AC snubber for direct AC/AC power converters

2011 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, 2011
While direct AC/AC converters like matrix converters have been around for a while, their applications are generally limited to low voltages due to complexity and issues in scaling to high voltages, including inadequate fault tolerance, complex switching patterns where errors can lead to device failures, and complex gate drive requirements for voltage ...

Input Power Factor of AC to AC Power Converters

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 1980
AC to ac power converters are static systems using solid-state switching devices that directly convert ac power of a given frequency to ac power of some desired frequency. They are used to link ac power systems of different frequencies, to provide variable power frequency supplies for ac motor drives, and to generate constant frequency power from the ...

SNS AC Power Distribution and Reliability of AC Power Supply

Proceedings of the 2005 Particle Accelerator Conference, 2006
When designing any power system under the new Construction Design and Maintenance (CDM) regulations (OSHA, NEC) and safety will be an important factor. It is worth acknowledging that safety and reliability can conflict. This can happen when safety considerations require the introduction of additional complexity, such as the provision of safety ...

Observer based power feedforward control for AC/AC converters

Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Thirty-Third IAS Annual Meeting (Cat. No.98CH36242), 2002
In this paper a disturbance observer based power feedforward is proposed as a new alternative control solution of the input AC/DC stage of a quasi direct AC/AC converter. The observer identifies the DC link current drawn by the output inverter section. The observed load current is then used to constitute the DC link power based feedforward signal added

A Single-Stage Capacitive AC-Link AC–AC Power Converter

IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2019
A single-stage three-phase ac–ac converter benefiting from a high-frequency alternating link voltage is proposed in this paper. In this converter, a very small film capacitor can transfer the energy from the input to the output, owing to the high-frequency alternating voltage of the link.
