Circulating microRNA signatures of cachexia and cancer in Canis familiaris as a comparative oncology model for human disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating microRNAs as biomarkers of cachexia and sex‐specific cancer in senior dogs. In 25 client‐owned dogs, four circulating miRNAs (miR‐15a, miR‐15b, miR‐16, miR‐140) were downregulated in cachexia, with miR‐16 the strongest individual biomarker (AUC = 0.899).

Polysplenia and other anatomical variants of the spleen

open access: yesJournal of Education, Health and Sport, 2022
The anatomy, physiology and embryology of the spleen are essential fields of study for the determination of congenital varieties as well as the pathological processes occurring in this organ. The aim of this study is to summarize the current knowledge on

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Beta1 subunits enable fentanyl‐induced BK channel activation and opioid regulation of cerebral artery diameter

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
During the current opioid crisis, the majority of overdose deaths are attributed to ultra‐potent synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl. While fentanyl exerts its action via opioid receptors, we propose that potassium channels in the brain blood vessels may also sense fentanyl.

Five‐Year Outcomes of Laparoscopic Sphincter‐Preserving Surgery for Rectal Cancer: A Prospective Study in Elderly Vietnamese Patients

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This prospective study demonstrates that laparoscopic sphincter‐preserving surgery is feasible for elderly patients. While overall survival reaches 70% at 5 years, advanced T‐stage and the omission of neoadjuvant therapy significantly drive recurrence, highlighting the need for personalized geriatric protocols despite logistical challenges.

Accessory Spleen

open access: yesRomanian journal of morphology and embryology = Revue roumaine de morphologie et embryologie, 2015
An accessory spleen (AS), or splenunculus, is a small nodule of splenic tissue found outside of the spleen. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the state of the organs of the deceased.

Radiologic Findings of Single Accessory Splenic Infarction in a Patient with Accessory Spleens in the Abdominal Cavity: A Case Report

open access: yesMedicina, 2023
The presence of multiple accessory spleens in the abdominal cavity is typically limited to two, with cases involving a higher number being exceedingly rare.

Accessory spleen as lead point in intussusception [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A 15-year-old boy, who had an episode of abdominal colic 4 years earlier, presented now with a week-long episode of abdominal pain. A computed tomographic scan confirmed the presence of an intussusception.

Biomimetic Hybrid‐Membrane Nanoreactor for Deep‐Seated Photodynamic Immunotherapy of Hepatocellular Carcinoma via Dual Catalysis‐Enhanced ROS Amplification and cGAS‐STING Activation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
UCNP@MnOx‐Hyp@HRM (UMHM) enables tumor targeting and accumulation. Under 808 nm NIR irradiation, PDT/CDT synergistically triggers ICD and cGAS–STING immunity for deep hepatocellular carcinoma therapy. ABSTRACT Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is promising against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
