Classifying Accidental Symmetries in Multi-Higgs Doublet Models [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. D 101, 095008 (2020), 2019
The potential of $n$-Higgs Doublet Models ($n$HDMs) contains a large number of SU(2)$_L$-preserving accidental symmetries as subgroups of the symplectic group Sp(2$n)$. To classify these, we introduce prime invariants and irreducible representations in bilinear field space that enable us to explicitly construct accidentally symmetric $n$HDM potentials.

Accidental Peccei-Quinn Symmetry Protected to Arbitrary Order. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2017
A SU(N)_{L}×SU(N)_{R} gauge theory for a scalar multiplet Y transforming in the bifundamental representation (N,N[over ¯]) preserves, for N>4, an accidental U(1) symmetry first broken at operator dimension N.

Outcome prediction for hypothermic patients in cardiac arrest

open access: yesJournal of Intensive Care, 2022
The 5A score predicts in-hospital mortality of patients suffering from accidental hypothermia, including those not in cardiac arrest. The HOPE score was specifically developed to predict survival for the subgroup of hypothermic patients in cardiac ...

The Philosophy of Accidentality [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Philosophical Association, 2020
AbstractIn mid-twentieth-century Mexican philosophy, there was a peculiar nationalist existentialist project focused on the cultural conditions of agency. This article revisits some of those ideas, including the idea that there is an important but underappreciated experience of one's relationship to norms and social meanings.

Accidents in (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg theories [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We study the role of accidental symmetries in two-dimensional (0,2) superconformal field theories obtained by RG flow from (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg theories.

Runge-Lenz Vector, Accidental SU(2) Symmetry, and Unusual Multiplets for Motion on a Cone [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Physics 323 (2008) 82-104, 2007
We consider a particle moving on a cone and bound to its tip by $1/r$ or harmonic oscillator potentials. When the deficit angle of the cone divided by $2 \pi$ is a rational number, all bound classical orbits are closed. Correspondingly, the quantum system has accidental degeneracies in the discrete energy spectrum.
