Stepwise incorporation of white clover (Trifolium repens L.)as fertiliser increases nitrogen fixation and improves nitrogen retention when intercropped with leek (Allium porrum L.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background and aims We investigated whether the incorporation of intercropped white clover as a split-dose fertiliser improves N retention of the plant-soil system in leek production. Methods White clover and leek were grown in pots where clover was

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Biomass production, symbiotic nitrogen fixation and inorganic N use in dual and tri-component annual intercrops [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The interspecific complementary and competitive interactions between pea (Pisum sativum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), grown as dual and tri-component intercrops were assessed in a field study in Denmark.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Nitrogen loss assessment and environmental consequences in the loess soil of China [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Attention is focused on fertilizer nitrogen loss and the environmental consequences in Shaanxi Province in loess region of China, including N losses to the atmosphere via ammonia volatilization, nitrification and denitrification, N losses to groundwater ...

Resolving the contributions of the membrane-bound and periplasmic nitrate reductase systems to nitric oxide and nitrous oxide production in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The production of cytotoxic nitric oxide (NO) and conversion into the neuropharmacological agent and potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) is linked with anoxic nitrate catabolism by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium.

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Appropriate water and nitrogen supply regulates the dynamics of nitrogen translocation and thereby enhancing the accumulation of nitrogen in maize grains

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
To improve nitrogen uptake and grain quality in maize, this study explores the dynamic processes of nitrogen accumulation, distribution, and translocation under varying water and nitrogen supplies, aiming to optimize water-nitrogen management practices ...

SEASONAL NITROGEN ACCUMULATION BY MATURE `CONCORD' GRAPEVINES

open access: yesHortScience, 1993
Mature vigorous `Concord' grapevines (Vitus labruscana, `Bailey) at Clarksville, MI, were excavated at two to five week intervals from 29 April (bud break) until 28 September. Vines were separated into roots, wood (trunks and cordons), new shoots and leaves, and fruit.
