A Formative Study on Designing Accurate and Natural Figure Captioning Systems

Extended Abstracts of the 2020 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2020
Automatic figure captioning is widely useful for improving the readability and accessibility of figures. Despite recent advances in figure question answering and parsing figure elements that enable machines to accurately read information from figures, the machine learning community still lacks sufficient understanding of this problem, on what contents ...

Accurate sequential self-localization of sensor nodes in closed-form

Signal Processing, 2012
This paper addresses the problem of obtaining an efficient estimator for sensor node self-localization using time of arrival (TOA) measurements. A sequential scheme is proposed that consists of closed-form single node localization and sensor position refinement algorithms as primitive.

An accurate form of Huygen's manometer adapted as a tensimeter

Journal of Scientific Instruments, 1931
An accurate form of Huygen's manometer is described, with special reference to its use as a tensimeter. Difficulties due to irregularities of the cross-section of the manometer tube, in the graduation of the scale, and in the glass of the air thermostat window, and to deviation of the manometer and the cathetometer from the vertical are avoided by ...

Accurate B-spline Free-Form Deformation of Polygonal Objects

Journal of Graphics Tools, 1998
Free-form deformation is an important geometric shape modification method in computer animation and geometric modeling. We explore it by means of functional composition via shifting operators. Our method takes a polygonal model as input but yields a curved model described by triangular Bezier patches as output.

The Metalog Distributions and Extremely Accurate Sums of Lognormals in Closed Form

2019 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC), 2019
The metalog probability distributions can represent virtually any continuous shape with a single family of equations, making them far more flexible for representing data than the Pearson and other distributions. Moreover, the metalogs are easy to parameterize with data without non-linear parameter estimation, have simple closed-form equations, and ...

Accurate closed-form approximations to Ricean sum distributions and densities

IEEE Communications Letters, 2005
The statistical distribution of a sum of Ricean random variables occurs extensively in wireless communications. A closed-form expression does not exist for the sum distribution and, furthermore, the Ricean random variable does not have a closed-form characteristic function.

Effective meshing and form factor calculation for accurate progressive radiosity

Proceedings Theory and Practice of Computer Graphics, 2004., 2004
Two effective methods are proposed to address two inaccuracies, deficient meshing and error-prone form factors, respectively, in the context of progressive radiosity. The first one addresses the meshing problem using an automatic adaptive subdivision that takes the radiosity difference, the radiosity residual, and the visibility information as error ...

Accurate closed‐form approximation for pricing Asian and basket options

Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry, 2008
AbstractBy approximating the distribution of the sum of correlated lognormals with some log‐extended‐skew‐normal distribution, we present closed‐form approximation formulae for pricing both Asian and basket options. Numerical comparison shows that our formulae provide both computational simplicity and accuracy.

An automatic processing technique for accurate surface form measurement

Optik, 2012
Abstract A single shot algorithm using a Fizeau interferometer was used to measure the form profile of a spherical smooth surface by means of fringe thinning process, which plays an important role in fringe patterns analysis. In this paper, an automatic processing technique based on the fringe thinning process is presented.
