Age and spatial behavior determine survival of male elk during the hunting season

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 1, January 2026.
We sought to investigate factors that influenced survival of male elk in Montana, USA, during the hunting season using 4 years of movement, age, and survival data. Our findings demonstrate that use of security attributes are the result of behavioral and demographic mechanisms with some age‐based nuances.

Efficacy of Probiotic Lactobacillus spp. Isolated From Healthy Korean Indigenous Calves

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 1, January 2026.
We investigated the probiotic efficacy of a Lactobacillus mixture from calves. This mixture contributes to beneficial bacteria proliferation and harmful bacteria suppression in the gut microbiota, as well as inhibition of pathogenic infections and improved immunity.

Optimal carbon partitioning drives sink potential dynamics in large‐scale pine reforestation under climate change

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our results contribute to understanding of carbon allocation dynamics in Mediterranean pine reforestation under climate change. Following the optimum allocation principle, carbon investment to aboveground organs increased dynamically in less drought‐tolerant species and under cooler and more humid conditions.

Increased fire occurrence benefits early oak regeneration in temperate deciduous forests in part by disrupting an invasive grass‐fire feedback

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
These results suggest that recurring fire can mitigate the negative effects of grass invasion and create conditions more favourable for early oak regeneration in temperate deciduous forests. Abstract Feedbacks between fire and non‐native grasses can lead to a grass‐fire cycle that intensifies grass invasion and harms native trees.

Combined volunteer and ecological network observations show broad‐scale temperature‐sensitivity patterns for deciduous plant flowering and leaf‐out times across the eastern USA

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 1, January 2026.
Phenological ‘big data’ encompassing over 100 species across the eastern USA show that leaf‐out and flowering occur earlier with warmer temperatures and that native species and individuals at high latitudes tend to have weaker temperature sensitivities than introduced species and more southern plants; these findings suggest adaptations within and ...

Seeing the forest for all the trees: Mycorrhizal‐associated nutrient economies are modulated by stem density and the synchrony between overstorey and understorey communities

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 1, January 2026.
The results indicate that relationships between plants and soils in forests are not only shaped by dominant overstorey trees but also the density and composition of understorey trees. Thus, efforts to predict the ecosystem consequences of species gains and losses may benefit from considering these elements of forest structure and not only the basal ...
