Acid phosphatases are ubiquitous enzymes present in almost all tissues. Isoenzyme 2 and the antigenically related but deglycosy-lated isoenzyme 4 are found predominantly in prostatic tissue. The association of elevated acid phosphatase with carcinoma of prostate is of long standing but the specificity of kinetic enzyme assays has been less than perfect.
