Ectomycorrhizal fungi and the nitrogen economy of Nothofagus in southern Patagonia

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2024.
Ectomycorrhizal fungi play essential roles in nitrogen cycling and plant nutrient uptake at high latitudes. However, they have disproportionately been studied in boreal forests dominated by evergreen conifers. We characterized ectomycorrhizal associations and the nitrogen economy of co‐occurring deciduous and evergreen angiosperms from the genus ...

Soluble adenylyl cyclase is an acid‐base sensor in rainbow trout red blood cells that regulates intracellular pH and haemoglobin–oxygen binding

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 240, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract Aim To identify the physiological role of the acid‐base sensing enzyme, soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC), in red blood cells (RBC) of the model teleost fish, rainbow trout. Methods We used: (i) super‐resolution microscopy to determine the subcellular location of sAC protein; (ii) live‐cell imaging of RBC intracellular pH (pHi) with specific sAC ...

Soil carbon and nitrogen cycling at the atmosphere–soil interface: Quantifying the responses of biocrust–soil interactions to global change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2024.
Despite the critical role of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) in dryland C and N cycles, little is known about how biocrust‐derived C and N move into the soil. This study reveals how biocrusts facilitate the downward movement of C and N and drive the formation of mineral‐associated organic matter in subcrust soils.

A placebo‐controlled, double‐blind study evaluating the effect of orally administered polyunsaturated fatty acids on the oclacitinib dose for atopic dogs

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 35, Issue 4, Page 408-417, August 2024.
Background – Supplementation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) enables dose reduction of prednisolone and ciclosporin in canine atopic dermatitis (cAD). Objective – To determine if oral administration of PUFA can reduce the dose of oclacitinib for cAD. Conclusion – Oral supplementation of PUFA allowed dose reduction of oclacitinib and improved pVAS,

Topiramate and severe metabolic acidosis: case report Acidose metabólica grave por topiramato: relato de caso

open access: yesArquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria, 2005
Topiramate infrequently induces anion gap metabolic acidosis through carbonic anhydrase inhibition on the distal tubule of the nephron - a type 2 renal tubular acidosis.

Lipid biomarkers reveal trophic relationships and energetic trade‐offs in contrasting phenotypes of the cold‐water coral Desmophyllum dianthus in Comau Fjord, Chile

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 126-142, January 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Benthic suspension feeders like corals and sponges are important bioengineers in many marine habitats, from the shallow tropics to the depth of polar oceans. While they are generally considered opportunistic, little is known about their actual in situ diet.
