Acoustic emission (AE), recorded during uniaxial compressive loading with constantly increasing stress and stepped stress increments until the fracture of prismatic marble specimens, were analyzed in terms of non-extensive statistical mechanics (NESM ...

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Deformation processes and emissions of acoustic impulses at the uniaxial loading of selected rocks from the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Basin [PDF]
The deformation and induced acoustic emission during uniaxial loading were studied. Three main phases were distinguished during the whole deformation process: the initial one, in which the adjustment of rock specimen to the loading frame occurred, the ...

Towards an intraoperative feedback system for laparoscopic access with the Veress needle
About 50 % of complications during laparoscopy occur when surgical access is created. The Veress needle and proposed technical alternatives do not provide reliable information to support the surgeons in guiding the needle, or the feedback is not clearly ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Using Otoacoustic emissions as a biometric
This paper presents research into using otoacoustic emissions (OAE) as a biometric. OAE are a group of sounds emitted by the cochlea of the ear. The main types are spontaneous OAE which are continuously emitted and the transient and distortion product ...

Observations of acoustic emission activity during gear defect diagnosis. [PDF]
It is widely recognised that acoustic emission (AE) is gaining ground as a non- destructive technique (NDT) for health diagnosis on rotating machinery.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Diesel engine fuel injection monitoring using acoustic measurements and independent component analysis [PDF]
Air-borne acoustic based condition monitoring is a promising technique because of its intrusive nature and the rich information contained within the acoustic signals including all sources.
