Optical Signature of Moiré Superlattices Formed by Twisted SrTiO3 Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We discover optical signatures from bonded interfaces in twisted SrTiO3 moiré superlattices, including low‐frequency Raman vibrational modes and strong second‐harmonic generation, consistent with strong interlayer coupling inferred from cross‐sectional electron microscopy and ab initio calculations. ABSTRACT Moiré superlattices formed at the interfaces

Determination of Fracture Initiation Locations during Cross-Measure Drilling for Hydraulic Fracturing of Coal Seams

open access: yesEnergies, 2016
When drilling coal-bearing sequences to enhance coal seam permeability by hydraulic fracturing (HF), the location where fractures are initiated is important. To date, most research on fracture initiation has studied the problem in two dimensions. In this

An Edible Chitosan‐Based Acoustic Sensor for Sound‐Responsive Actuation in Edible Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces an edible acoustic sensor for robotic food and edible robotics. Built from a chitosan piezoelectric film between gold electrodes, the sensor enables acoustic communication through ON/OFF keying. Integrated into an edible robot with pneumatically actuated arms and neck, it responds to high‐frequency tones.

A Study on the Fracture of Cementitious Materials in Terms of the Rate of Acoustic Emissions in the Natural Time Domain

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
A novel approach for describing the acoustic activity in brittle structural materials while they are loaded mechanically at levels close to those causing macroscopic fracture is proposed.

Forecasting Multiphase Magma Failure at the Laboratory Scale Using Acoustic Emission Data

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2018
Magmas fracture under high shear stresses, producing radiating elastic waves. At the volcano scale, eruption is often preceded by accelerating seismicity, while at the laboratory scales, sample failure appears to be preceded by similarly accelerating ...

Hydrogel‐Based 3D‐Printed Anthropomorphic Breast Phantom for Emulating Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Mammary Tissue. Applications in Microwave Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D‐printable breast phantom is developed using patient‐derived MRI data and hydrogels that replicate the dielectric properties of healthy and cancerous tissues. Mechanical and dielectric characterization confirm its suitability for microwave imaging.

Acoustic Emission

open access: yes, 2018
Acoustic Emission (AE) is an NDE technique that measures the elastic energy released in the form of acoustic waves in materials that undergo irreversible structure changes (e.g., plastic deformation, cracking, rupture). The emitted acoustic waves are captured by sensors attached to the material’s surface.

From Bulk to Colloidal Nanocrystals: Top‐Down Synthesis of Highly Luminescent Cs2ZrCl6:Te4+ Double Perovskite Nanocrystals for X‐Ray Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Top‐down ultrasonication produces highly emissive Cs2ZrCl6:Te4+ nanocrystals (NCs) with a PLQY of 65%, which is higher compared to that of the NCs synthesized by typical bottom‐up hot‐injection synthesis. The colloidal Cs2ZrCl6:Te4+ NCs have been found to be potential candidates for x‐ray scintillation imaging.
