ACTH precursors characterize the ectopic ACTH syndrome
Clinical Endocrinology, 1994SummaryOBJECTIVE ACTH is secreted by the pituitary following processing of larger molecular weight precursors, proopiomelanocortin and pro‐ACTH. Ectopic ACTH syndrome refers to the secretion of ACTH by non‐pituitary tumours, but the predominant circulating form of proopiomelano‐cortin‐related peptides remains unclear.PATIENTS Fifteen patients with ...

A 38-year-old male was diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome. Biochemical tests showed hypokalaemia and hypercortisolaemia, with failure of suppression following high dose dexamethasone, suggesting an ectopic or adrenal source. Adrenocorticotrophic hormone levels were >100 IU/L (normal 3–14 IU/L).

Ectopic Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Syndrome
Archives of Internal Medicine, 1985To the Editor. —In the SeptemberArchives, Sigman and Wallach 1 described a patient with unilateral adrenal hypertrophy and contralateral adrenal atrophy. The authors suggested this was the result of an invasive metastasis to the hypertrophic adrenal that produced ACTH and consequently through hypothalamic feedback caused the contralateral adrenal ...

Ectopic ACTH Syndrome and CRH-Mediated Cushing’s Syndrome
Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America, 1994The ectopic ACTH syndrome accounts for a substantial number of patients with naturally occurring Cushing's syndrome. Despite the progress achieved in elucidating the pathophysiology of Cushing's syndrome, clinicians continue to experience diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Adrenals in Ectopic ACTH Syndrome
Pediatrics, 1971In Dr. Gilbert S. Omenn's1 otherwise excellent review of ectopic hormone syndromes associated with tumors in childhood we find the following sentence: "Completely characterized cases of ectopic ACTH syndrome have bilateral adrenal hyperplasia, normal pituitary basophils, positive assay for ACTH in the tumor, and failure of suppression of elevated ...

Although the clinical and biochemical discrimination of true Cushing syndrome from the Cushing phenotype is sometime difficult, four diagnostic studies are currently used: late-night serum and salivary cortisol level, urine free cortisol level, low-dose dexamethasone suppression, and the dexamethasone-CRH test.

ECTOPIC ACTH SYNDROME AND MEDULLARY THYROID CARCINOMA
Acta Endocrinologica, 1977ABSTRACT A 40 year old patient with medullary thyroid carcinoma subsequently developed Cushing's syndrome with presumably ectopic ACTH formation. The immunoreactive calcitonin in the plasma was greatly and ACTH slightly increased. Despite the excessively high calcitonin concentration the patient finally developed a serious osteoporosis which presumably

Ectopic ACTH Syndrome in APUD Tumors
Oncology, 1982Rapidly progressing hypercorticism was observed in 2 patients with malignant neoplasms, a 72-year-old man with anaplastic small cell carcinoma and a 48-year-old woman with a primary apudoma of the liver. Both patients were treated with chemotherapy in conventional doses.

Ectopic ACTH-Syndrome due to ovarian carcinoma
Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology & Diabetes, 2009The case of a 60-year-old female with severe and rapidly progressing Cushing's syndrome with fatal consequences is described. Both the clinical and the biochemical findings were consistent with ectopic ACTH production. A computed tomographic (CT) scan revealed intact pituitary and enlarged adrenal glands.

Syndromes of Ectopic ACTH Secretion
2001Cushing’s syndrome refers to the manifestations of chronic glucocorticoid excess and may result from various causes that are all associated with tumors. The most common one being that which was first recognized by Harvey Cushing, and therefore called Cushing’ s disease, is caused by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) hypersecretion by a pituitary ...
