Adolescent individuation is frequently signified by acting out independent and dependent strivings. There can be a struggle with attachment to parents who do not acknowledge the adolescent's emerging identity. A narcissistic bond can develop between parent and adolescent that impedes individuation.

Hypochondriasis, acting out and counteracting out

Hypochondriasis is characterized by a particular kind of acting out, basically medical, which in turn is likely to evoke medical counter‐acting out on the part of the therapist.

The author sets out to compare her own ideas on the archaic matrix of the Oedipus complex, as opposed to the fully developed Oedipus complex, with Glover's conception of the different developmental stages of the mental apparatus in which historical priority is given to what he calls 'psychosomatic reactions' over later psychoneurotic symptoms.
