"Actinobacillus porcitonsillarum" is a newly suggested commensal species colonizing porcine tonsils. In the diagnostic laboratory the sole difference to the porcine lung pathogen Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is a negative mannitol reaction. In order to substantiate and improve this important differentiation a PCR test was developed using the ...

Endocarditis due to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans
Journal of Infection, 1985A case of infective endocarditis in a 38-year-old Saudi male caused by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is reported. The patient was treated successfully with a combination of benzyl penicillin and gentamicin. Previously reported cases are reviewed.

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans fimbriae
Oral Microbiology and Immunology, 1988Freshly isolated Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans strains were found to possess fimbriae. These appendages appeared to be irreversibly lost after 30 to 40 subcultures in the laboratory. The fimbriated strains were associated with a specific type of colonial morphology designated SP (Star Positive); the non‐fimbriated variant colony was designated ...

Endocarditis caused by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans
Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 1984Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a gram-negative coccobacillus which is a very rare cause of bacterial endocarditis. Preexisting cardiac lesions are a main contributing factor, and antibiotic prophylaxis has long been felt necessary before dental or other manipulation to prevent endocarditis.

Organisms of the genus Actinobacillus were first described by Lignieres and Spitz (1902) in actinomycotic lesions in cattle in Argentina. The authors referred to this organism as “l’actinobacille” based on its morphology and its association with the pathological lesion. In 1910, Brumpt proposed the name of Actinobacillus lignieresii.
