Gut Microbiomes of Two Bamboo Locusts Reveal Divergent Metabolic Potentials

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
We compared the gut microbiota of two bamboo‐feeding locust pests, Ceracris kiangsu and Ceracris nigricornis, using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing for six geographic populations of C. kiangsu and publicly available C. nigricornis datasets. Both species were dominated by Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, but showed significant differences in community ...

Seasonal Variation of Gut Bacterial Community in Wild Apodemus agrarius Is Associated With Intrinsic and Extrinsic Environments

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
This study reveals sex‐specific associations among seasonal reproductive activity, gut bacterial diversity, and body size in wild mice. ABSTRACT Environmental factors and the reproductive status of animals have been reported to influence host gut microbial community structure significantly.

Cross‐Range Comparison of Supraglacial Microbial Communities Between Gongga and Gangrigabu Mountains, Southeast Tibetan Plateau

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
We investigated bacterial and fungal community distribution on supraglacial debris from two monsoon‐influenced mountain ranges (Gongga and Gangrigabu) using high‐throughput sequencing. Despite harsh, nitrogen‐limited conditions, diverse microbial taxa were detected, with clear distance–decay patterns and strong glacier‐specificity; heterogeneous ...

Seasonal Effect of a Small Hydropower Plant on Benthic Biofilm Microbial Community Structure and Predicted Functional Potential

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
Biofilm microbial composition varies significantly; diversity is higher in spring and autumn. The dewatered reach shows the broadest niche and dominant stochastic assembly. Seasonal assembly shift: deterministic in summer, stochastic in winter. Nutrient cycling genes vary more among sites than seasons under SHP influence.

Gut Microbiota Differences in Wild Asian Elephants From Pu'er, China

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
This study compared the gut microbiota of two wild Asian elephant populations in Jiangcheng (JC) and Liushun (LS), Yunnan, China. Significant differences in microbial structure, diversity, and function were found. Across samples, 24 phyla, 48 classes, 98 orders, 164 families, 288 genera, and 351 species were annotated.
