The oral actinomycetes

Archives of Oral Biology, 1959
Abstract The mouth appears to be the normal habitat of a large proportion of recognizable genera of Actinomycetes, and in many cases the main or even sole source. The most important are Actinomyces, Leptotrichia, Fusobacterium and Nocardia ; only the last has saprophytic representatives. It is probable that these oral parasites are descended, by a

The actinomycetes. vol III: antibiotics of actinomycetes.

JAMA, 1963
This volume is divided into two parts, part A : "The Nature, Formation, and Activities of Antibiotics Produced by Actinomycetes," and part B : "Descriptions of the Various Antibiotics Produced by Actinomycetes," which is a compilation of information published on antimicrobial, antiviral, and antitumor substances.

Prodigiosin in an Actinomycete

Nature, 1961
PRODIGIOSIN, the bright red pigment produced by organisms of the genus Serratia, is among the more conspicuous pigments extant in the microbial world. The chemical nature of prodigiosin has been the subject of extensive study and was defined as a tri-pyrrylmethene by Wrede and Rothhaas in 19341.

The Actinomycetes and Their Antibiotics

1963
Publisher Summary The literature on the actinomycetes and their antibiotics has been accumulating at such a rapid pace and is of such important theoretical and practical significance, that there is increasing requirement for its frequent reviews. This chapter provides an overview of some of these reviews and studies.

Studies in Actinomycetes in Egyptian Soils I. The Distribution of Actinomycetes

Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, Parasitenkunde, Infektionskrankheiten und Hygiene. Zweite Naturwissenschaftliche Abteilung: Allgemeine, Landwirtschaftliche und Technische Mikrobiologie, 1973
Summary The distribution of actinomycetes in Egyptian soils was investigated, using four media. There was no significant difference between the counts obtained on different media in each particular soil. The effect of the soil ecological and geographical situation tends to influence the distribution of actinomycetes more significantly than the soil

Actinomycetes and Lignin Degradation

2005
Publisher Summary The chapter discusses the role of actinomycetes in lignocelluloses breakdown, and the details of the scale and method by which such breakdown takes place are limited. However, there is a wide range of examples where streptomyces and other actinomycetes have been identified as degrading lignin or lignocelluloses. The enzymes involved

Bacteriolysis by thermophilic actinomycetes

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 1967
Eighty cultures of thermophilic actinomycetes isolated from Bombay soils were screened for lytic action on heat-killed cells of six test bacteria. The majority possessed lytic properties of varying degrees. Gram-negative bacteria were far more susceptible than gram-positive ones.

Actinomycetes in the Desert of Kuwait

Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, Parasitenkunde, Infektionskrankheiten und Hygiene. Zweite Naturwissenschaftliche Abteilung: Allgemeine, Landwirtschaftliche und Technische Mikrobiologie, 1976
The distribution of actinomycetes in two desert localities in Kuwait was investigated. The genus Streptomyces was dominant in the two studied localities. Attempts to classify this genus in groups and species were made. Species producing straight or wavy spore chains were dominating in the two localities.

Viability studies on actinomycetes

Mycopathologia, 1998
Eighty-nine Actinomycetes strains were tested for their viability, morphological and physiological characteristics after being kept under paraffin oil overlay and distilled water for a period between 10-30 years. Most of the studied strains belong to the "Lorenzo De Montemayor" collection.

Actinomycetes in submerged culture

Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 1992
The range of morphological forms of actinomycetes in shaken flask culture and fermenters is reviewed. Some of the factors that influence pellet formation and its prevention are discussed. The relationship between morphology and production of antibiotics and other metabolites is also examined.
