Filamentous Growth in Activated Sludge

Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 1996
Bulking and foaming in activated sludge have been associated with filamentous overgrowth. Filamentous Nocardia amarae and nonfilamentous Pseudomonas auruginosa were cultured using fatty acids (C2-C24) as the sole carbon. N. amarae could utilize all acids tested for growth, whereas P. auruginosa hardly grew on acids with 12 or more carbons.

Bacteriology of activated sludge

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 1965
The bacteriology and biochemistry of activated sludge grown in domestic waste water or fed with synthetic media were studied. The nature of the flocs was investigated by determining morphological and physiological characteristics of many strains isolated.

Activated sludge processes

2006
This chapter focuses on the activated sludge (AS) process, which is currently the most widely used biological wastewater treatment process in the developed world. The AS process consists of two separate phases— aeration and sludge settlement. This unit is usually operated with no settlement allowed in the aeration tank, and a completely separate ...
