How to Break the Rules of Dioxygen Activation

open access: yesChemistry & Biology, 2014
In this issue of Chemistry & Biology, Thierbach and colleagues establish the chemical mechanism for a cofactor-independent dioxygenase enzyme, a member of a small group of enzymes that can activate dioxygen without requiring a metal ion or redox cofactor.

Effects of active microbreaks on the physical and mental well-being of office workers: A systematic review

open access: yesCogent Engineering, 2022
Risk factors associated with sedentary work and prolonged sitting time can be detrimental to office workers’ health and productivity. Recent literature introduced the concept of active microbreaks and their benefits to sedentary workers.

Effectiveness of Resistance Intradialytic Exercise Compared to Aerobic Intradialytic Exercise for Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis commonly experience reduced physical function, fatigue, poor sleep quality, and impaired health‐related quality of life. Intradialytic exercise has been proposed as a non‐pharmacological strategy to improve these outcomes.

Active and break spells of summer monsoon over Bangladesh

open access: yesHeliyon, 2023
This study examines the intraseasonal variability of the southwest summer monsoon over Bangladesh using rainfall data from rain gauge stations of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) collected over 30 years (1988-2017). In this paper, active and break spells are defined as periods during the peak monsoon months of July and August, in which the

Active and passive work breaks during simulated laparoscopy among laparoscopic surgeons: study protocol for a controlled, randomised cross-over laboratory trial

open access: yesBMJ Open, 2020
Introduction Laparoscopy has partially replaced open surgery due to the lower infection rate for the patient and hence better and shorter recovery. However, the surgeon’s physical load is higher due to longer duration static and awkward body postures ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Stop and revive? The effectiveness of nap and active rest breaks for reducing driver sleepiness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two commonly utilized sleepiness countermeasures: a nap break and an active rest break. The effects of the countermeasures were evaluated by physiological (EEG), subjective, and driving performance ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.
