Capillary transport in adsorption from liquid phase on activated carbon

AIChE Journal, 1999
AbstractTwo models presented here predict the kinetics of adsorption from solution. The adsorbate is considered to form a capillary separated phase inside the micropores. The transport in the adsorbed phase is modeled as capillary transport under the influences of gradients in capillary pressure.

Carbon dioxide transport through enzymatically active synthetic membranes

Chemical Engineering Science, 1975
The facilitated transport of CO2 through thin liquid membranes, Millipore filter membranes, and cross-linked protein membranes has been investigated using a tracer 14CO2 technique. Both the uncatalyzed reactions and the enzymatic reactions catalyzed by carbonic anhydrase in homogeneous solution and immobilized in several membrane configurations were ...

Electric Pulse Discharge Activated Carbon Supercapacitors for Transportation Application

JOM, 2012
ScienceTomorrow is developing a high-speed, low-cost process for synthesizing high-porosity electrodes for electrochemical double-layer capacitors. Four types of coal (lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, and anthracite) were used as precursor materials for spark discharge activation with multiscale porous structure.

Intraparticle Mass Transport Mechanism in Activated Carbon Adsorption of Phenols

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 1996
Two parallel diffusion mechanisms, pore and surface, can control the rate of contaminant adsorption. The two mechanisms are different functions of temperature and adsorbate concentration. To develop a mechanistic design model for adsorption processes, the two mechanisms must be evaluated separately.

The Carbon Footprint of Transport Activities of the 401 Military General Hospital of Athens

Environmental Modeling & Assessment, 2020
It is a scientifically accepted fact that climate change constitutes a major challenge for the future well-being of the whole humanity. Medical and hospital care facilities generate their own greenhouse emissions. Hospital transportation activities encompass not only the transportation of patients and medical personnel but also the operation of ...

Cyclic AMP effects on chloride transport and carbonic anhydrase activity in frog skin

Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1990
Unidirectional (36Cl) chloride fluxes across isolated and short-circuited frog skin were measured, with both sides bathed in low chloride solution. Transepithelial chloride influx was inhibited by exogenous cAMP as well as by substances enhancing its cellular concentration, such as epinephrine, isoproterenol, and 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX ...

Bundling dynamics regulates the active mechanics and transport in carbon nanotube networks and their nanocomposites

Nanoscale, 2012
High-density carbon nanotube networks (CNNs) continue to attract interest as active elements in nanoelectronic devices, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and multifunctional nanocomposites. The interplay between the network nanostructure and its properties is crucial, yet current understanding remains limited to the passive response. Here, we employ

The relation between carbonic anhydrase activity and ion transport in elasmobranch and rabbit lens

Experimental Eye Research, 1981
The role of carbonic anhydrase in lens ion transport was studied by measuring sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate ion concentration and isotopic fluxes during enzyme inhibition or its absence. Three sulfonamides were evaluated for their ability to penetrate the lens and for pharmacological properties that would best provide complete inhibition.

Effect of water activity on carbon dioxide transport in cholinium-based ionic liquids with carbonic anhydrase

Separation and Purification Technology, 2016
Abstract The present work reports a study of the affinity of carbon dioxide towards biocompatible cholinium-based ionic liquids, aiming the development of a sustainable process for carbon dioxide removal. Moreover, the enhancement on carbon dioxide transport by the addition of carbonic anhydrase, able to catalyze the reversible reaction of carbon ...

Diffusion and Active Transport of Inorganic Carbon Species in Freshwater and Marine Macroalgae

1987
Some macroalgae from both freshwater and marine habitats are known (by a number of criteria of varying degress of rigour) to be able to use exogenous HCO3 - in photosynthesis, while other can only use CO2 (1–5). Furthermore, while some of the macroalgae have photosynthetic physiology characteristic of C3 plants, others are “C4-like”, although the ...
