Interactions between Molten High‐Silicon Electrical Steels and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how several molten high‐silicon electrical steels interact with both conventional and recycled MgO–C refractories. For this, various immersion experiments are conducted. In addition to infiltration, a number of mechanisms are identified and explained that control the corrosion of the refractory material.

Packaging of Macroscopic Material Payloads: Needs, Challenges, Concepts, and Future Directions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This review introduces a unified framework that decomposes any macroscopic packaging system into the payload, packaging material, and packaging strategy and combines them into a conceptual packaging equation: packaging strategy = payload + packaging material.

Active cooling design for scramjet engines using optimization methods [PDF]

open access: yes
A methodology for using optimization in designing metallic cooling jackets for scramjet engines is presented. The optimal design minimizes the required coolant flow rate subject to temperature, mechanical-stress, and thermal-fatigue-life constraints on ...

Synthesis of a Novel Thermoresponsive S53P4 Bioactive Glass Extract–Poloxamer 407 Injectable Hydrogels: Assessment of Biocompatibility and Antimicrobial Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates innovative thermoreversible hydrogels derived from S53P4 bioactive glass extracts to aid in the healing of infected diabetic foot wounds. These injectable gels, which gel at body temperature, release beneficial ions and remain stable over time.

Modeling a Transient Pressurization with Active Cooling Sizing Tool [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
As interest in the area of in-space zero boil-off cryogenic propellant storage develops, the need to visualize and quantify cryogen behavior during ventless tank self-pressurization and subsequent cool-down with active thermal control has become apparent.

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

Self-sustained frictional cooling in active matter

open access: yesNature Communications
Cooling processes in nature are typically generated by external contact with a cold reservoir or bath. According to the laws of thermodynamics, the final temperature of a system is determined by the temperature of the environment.

The CF6 Jet Engine Performance Improvement - Low Pressure Turbine Active Clearance Control [PDF]

open access: yes
A low pressure turbine (LPT) active clearance control (ACC) cooling system was developed to reduce the fuel consumption of current CF6-50 turbofan engines for wide bodied commercial aircraft. The program performance improvement goal of 0.3% delta sfc was
