Active pixel sensor array as a detector for electron microscopy
Ultramicroscopy, 2005A new high-resolution recording device for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is urgently needed. Neither film nor CCD cameras are systems that allow for efficient 3-D high-resolution particle reconstruction. We tested an active pixel sensor (APS) array as a replacement device at 200, 300, and 400 keV using a JEOL JEM-2000 FX II and a JEM-4000 EX ...

Design of a self-correcting active pixel sensor
Proceedings 2001 IEEE International Symposium on Defect and Fault Tolerance in VLSI Systems, 2002Digital cameras are growing ever larger in silicon area and pixel count, which increases the occurrence of defects at fabrication time, or dead pixels that develop over their lifetime. An active pixel sensor self-correcting for most common faults is created by splitting the photodiode and readout transistors into two parallel portions with only a small

A CMOS active-pixel image sharpness sensor
2014 IEEE 57th International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS), 2014The technique of maximizing image sharpness is a powerful means of adaptively correcting phase aberrations in wavefronts. Crucial to this correction is a sensor that provides an accurate real-time estimate of image sharpness. In this paper, we introduce a novel image sharpness sensor using CMOS active pixel technology that computes image sharpness at a

A toolkit to demystify CMOS Active Pixel Sensors
2013 IEEE International Conference on Microelectronic Systems Education (MSE), 2013No specific pedagogical methods are dedicated to explain the specificity of CMOS Active Pixel Sensor (APS) technologies. Nevertheless, this technology of image sensing is wide-spread in today's life and needs a good understanding on behalf of our students in microelectronics. This paper proposes a toolkit implemented with MATLAB.

Adaptive multiple resolution CMOS active pixel sensor
2004 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37512), 2004A smart image sensor with adaptive multiple resolution ability is presented. This sensor is based on the quadtree decomposition algorithm, which decomposes an image into square homogeneous regions. After the image is segmented, only the value of the block and its size are stored or transmitted.

A differential active pixel sensor
SPIE Proceedings, 2004A differential active pixel sensor in present day CMOS technologies is described. The primary goal of the architecture is to reduce visible noise artifacts in the output image. Artifacts caused by gain mismatches among pixel elements, kTC noise, fixed-pattern noise due to reset mismatches, and corrupted pixels are considered.

CMOS active pixel image sensor
IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, 1994A new CMOS active pixel image sensor is reported. The sensor uses a 2.0 /spl mu/m double-poly, double-metal foundry CMOS process and is realized as a 128/spl times/128 array of 40 /spl mu/m/spl times/40 /spl mu/m pixels. The sensor features TTL compatible voltages, low noise and large dynamic range, and will be useful in machine vision and smart sensor

Active Pixel Sensors for electron microscopy
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2007The technology used for monolithic CMOS imagers, popular for cell phone cameras and other photographic applications, has been explored for charged particle tracking by the high-energy physics community for several years. This technology also lends itself to certain imaging detector applications in electron microscopy.
