Explorations of electric-current system in solar active regions .1. Empirical inferences of the current flows

open access: yes, 1987
In this paper we explore techniques to identify sources of electric current systems and their channels of flow in solar active regions. Measured photospheric vector magnetic fields (VMF) together with high-resolution white-light and H filtergrams provide

Slow Solar Wind: Origin in an Independent Small‐Scale Solar Dynamo

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 13, 16 July 2025.
Abstract Separation of the solar wind (SW) into three flow types (coronal mass ejections (CMEs), high speed streams (HSSs), and slow solar wind (SSW)) reveals an inverse relationship between the percentage of time Earth spends in SSW during a year and its annually averaged magnetic field strength (B).

Solar flux emergence : a three-dimensional numerical study

open access: yes, 2008
Flux is continually emerging on the Sun, making its way from the solar interior up into the atmosphere. Emergence occurs on small-scales in the quiet Sun where magnetic fragments emerge, interact and cancel and on large-scales in active regions where ...

Active chromospheric fibril singularity

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. The fine structures of the solar chromosphere, driven by photospheric motions, play a crucial role in the dynamics of solar magnetic fields. Many such structures have already been identified, such as fibrils, filament feet, and arch filament systems.

NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information Space Weather Data Inventory Status

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 23, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract We present here an updated overview of the Space Weather data curated and/or generated, improved, archived, and disseminated by the Solar Terrestrial Physics (STP) Section of the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Magnetohydrodynamic waves in structured atmospheres

open access: yes, 2012
The effect of structuring, in the form of magnetic or density inhomogeneities, on the magnetohydrodynamic (mhd) waves of an infinite plasma is investigated.

Robust Statistical Techniques for Operational Maintenance of the 10.7 cm Solar Radio Flux

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2025.
Abstract The F10.7 solar radio flux is a critical quantity for operational space weather nowcasting and forecasting, where it is routinely used as a driver for coupled atmospheric models to estimate a variety of important quantities such as the neutral atmospheric density.

The tangential discontinuous surface of velocity in solar chromosphere

open access: yes, 1991
The data of velocity and magnetic fields in the solar photosphere (5324 angstrom) and the chromosphere (4861 angstrom) clearly show the features of tangential discontinuity of velocity in the chromosphere.

IRIS2+: A Comprehensive Database of Stratified Thermodynamic Models in the Low Solar Atmosphere

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
We present the most comprehensive collection of stratified-in-optical-depth thermodynamic models of the lower solar atmosphere. This database, named IRIS ^2+ , consists of 40,320 synthetic representative profiles (RPs) and their corresponding ...

Kinematics of chromospherically active late-type dwarfs in the solar neighborhood

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 1990
The space motions of chromospherically active late-type dwarfs (solar-type stars, K and M dwarfs, and BY Draconis binaries) are illustrated and discussed. Except for a small number of deviant stars, all the active single stars have the kinematics of young stars (age about 0.5 Gyr). The most egregious exception is HD 152391, which appears to be a single
