鍼灸は我が国に伝来以来1500年にわたって独自の発展を遂げてきた。その間，現代に至るまで，鍼灸は原則的に個人の力量に頼る医療であったが，現代医学にチーム医療という概念が浸透し始めてきたこともあり，鍼灸についてもチーム医療の一員として取り入れている施設が少しずつ増えてきている。特に近年大学病院などで鍼灸の応用が始まっているのはその現れである。そうした大学病院で，どのような疾患に対して鍼灸が用いられ，どのようにその効果を評価しているのかという点を明らかにするとともに，現代医療において鍼灸が果たすべき役割を考えてみる目的で，鍼灸を積極的に取り入れている4つの代表的な大学病院の状況を報告した。
