Descending Aortic Diameter of 5.5 cm or Greater Is Not an Accurate Predictor of Acute Type B Aortic Dissection

open access: yesJournal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 2011
ObjectiveThe risk of acute type B aortic dissection is thought to increase with descending thoracic aortic diameter. Currently, elective repair of the descending thoracic aorta is indicated for an aortic diameter of 5.5 cm or greater.

Tom Gregory always considered himself relatively healthy despite the fact that he had been diagnosed as having hypertension and told that he had had a heart attack a few years ago. He hadn't spent time in the hospital, so how bad could it have been, he thought. When I first met him, however, that had changed.

Acute Aortic Dissection in China

The American Journal of Cardiology, 2012
The clinical profiles and outcomes of acute aortic dissection (AAD) have not been evaluated in China. We retrospectively analyzed, from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2011, the data from 1,812 patients (mean age 51.1 ± 10.9 years; 77.5% men) with AAD (726 with type A and 1,086 with type B) from 19 large hospitals.

Acute Aortic Dissection

Postgraduate Medicine, 1971
The sometimes confusing picture of aortic dissection can be understood best if one relates the symptoms and signs either to the dissection itself or to the consequent occlusion of arteries arising from the aorta. Mortality is high, particularly when the dissection involves the ascending aorta.

Management of Acute Aortic Dissection

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1975
The therapy for acute dissecting aneurysm of the aorta remains a difficult problem for thoracic surgeons. Because of an excessive operative mortality in patients with acute dissection who were operated on within 24 hours of hospital admission, we have utilized intensive medical management to delay surgical intervention.

Acute aortic dissection

Current Treatment Options in Cardiovascular Medicine, 1999
The treatment of patients with acute aortic dissection must begin as soon as the diagnosis is first suspected. Aggressive measures to lower the systemic blood pressure and its rate of increase (dP/dt), usually with intravenous beta-blockade in combination with sodium nitroprusside, should be instituted immediately, even before confirmatory imaging ...

Acute and Chronic Aortic Dissection

Heart Disease, 2002
Each year acute aortic dissection is diagnosed in 2,000 individuals in the United States. Acute aortic dissection is no longer a catastrophic event because this problem can be rapidly diagnosed with current medical technology, and therefore promptly treated with medication and surgery. Consequently, patients with aortic dissection can survive for 10 to

Acute aortic dissection.

Acta chirurgica Belgica, 1994
Acute aortic dissection is initiated by an intimal tear most often found in the ascending or descending thoracic aorta. A high index of suspicion is necessary to establish diagnosis. In the acute setting, transoesophageal echocardiography is very helpful to confirm the diagnosis, locate the intimal tear and demonstrate the extent of dissection.
