Progress Toward a Portable Artificial Lung: A Systematic Review
Eight portable respiratory assist devices were identified. The CE‐marked MobyBox and the FDA‐approved Breethe OXY‐1 system are in clinical use. Each device is substantially minimized to allow ambulation, but further work is required to address challenges related to anticoagulant management and safe mobilization. Created in BioRender. Human brain matters: Navigating the neuropathology of COVID‐19
Severe COVID‐19 is associated with vascular dysregulation and chronic neuroinflammation, leading to axonal injury and neurodegeneration. In long COVID or PASC, persistent alterations in neuroimaging and biofluid biomarkers reflect ongoing neuronal damage and neuroinflammation, contributing to long‐term neurological symptoms including fatigue, cognitive

Abstract Background and Purpose Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and subsequent pulmonary fibrosis are associated with high mortality and limited treatment options. Periostin (POSTN) is a profibrotic mediator predicted to be regulated by microRNA‐19a‐3p (miR‐19a‐3p), but the relevance of this axis in ARDS‐associated pulmonary fibrosis remains

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
Acute respiratory distress syndrome is underrecognized and has a >40% mortality in moderate-to-severe disease. Recognition utilizing the Berlin definition clarifies the mortality risk and drives treatment efforts maximizing survival. Lung protective strategies as well as neuromuscular blockade and prone positioning have been shown to have a survival ...

Elevated CO2 (hypercapnia) is a feature of serious lung diseases, for example COPD and contributes to poor patient prognosis through modulation of immune cell function. Here we employ state‐of‐the art metabolomic and isotope tracing approaches to reveal CO2‐dependent mitochondrial alterations linked to suppressed ATP, proline and glutamate levels in ...

Spectroscopic Approach to Capillary-Alveolar Membrane Damage Induced Acute Lung Injury
BACKGROUND: Acute (or adult) respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is often associated with a high mortality rate in the critical care population. The term acute lung injury (ALI), a primitive phase of ARDS, was introduced by the European and American ...
