Acute bilateral phrenic nerve neuropathy causing hypercapnic respiratory failure associated with checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy

open access: yesRespiratory Medicine Case Reports, 2021
We present two cases of acute hypercapnic respiratory failure due to diaphragmatic dysfunction secondary to bilateral phrenic nerve paralysis, in patients who were receiving immunotherapy for melanoma.

Assessment of pulmonary edema: principles and practice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Pulmonary edema increasingly is recognized as a perioperative complication affecting outcome. Several risk factors have been identified, including those of cardiogenic origin, such as heart failure or excessive fluid administration, and those related to ...

Dammarenediol II enhances etoposide‐induced apoptosis by targeting O‐GlcNAc transferase and Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling in liver cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Etoposide induces DNA damage, activating p53‐dependent apoptosis via caspase‐3/7, which cleaves PARP1. Dammarenediol II enhances this apoptotic pathway by suppressing O‐GlcNAc transferase activity, further decreasing O‐GlcNAcylation. The reduction in O‐GlcNAc levels boosts p53‐driven apoptosis and influences the Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling pathway ...

SIRT4 positively regulates autophagy via ULK1, but independently of HDAC6 and OPA1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells expressing SIRT4 (H161Y), a catalytically inactive mutant of the sirtuin SIRT4, fail to upregulate LC3B‐II and exhibit a reduced autophagic flux under stress conditions. Interestingly, SIRT4(H161Y) promotes phosphorylation of ULK1 at S638 and S758 that are associated with inhibition of autophagy initiation.

Comparison of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation outcome for influenza-associated acute respiratory failure in Japan between 2009 and 2016

open access: yesJournal of Intensive Care, 2018
Background Since the 2009 pandemic influenza, we have nationally established a committee of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) project. This project involves adequate respiratory management for severe respiratory failure using ECMO.

Reduced adiponectin levels in patients with COVID‐19 acute respiratory failure: A case‐control study

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2021
Hypoadiponectinemia is speculated to play a key role in the relationship between obesity and COVID‐19 respiratory failure. However, only one study has examined adiponectin levels in COVID‐19 patients, and none have investigated adiponectin levels ...
