Hypothermia in acute stroke

Current Treatment Options in Neurology, 2005
Moderate hypothermia (MH) is neuroprotective in animal models of focal ischemia when it is induced during, or within few hours after, onset of ischemia. In patients with acute stroke, several observational studies suggested normothermia or mild hypothermia as independent prognostic factors for favorable outcome.

Management of Acute Strokes

Surgical Clinics of North America, 1982
Situations in which the surgeon is commonly consulted for an acute or unstable stroke include (1) suspected carotid artery disease, (2) postarteriography, and (3) postcarotid endarterectomy. The management of these problems is discussed in detail.

Acute stroke units

Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, 1999
In December of 1996, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) sponsored a national symposium on Rapid Identification and Treatment of Acute Stroke. 1 One of the basic messages taken from this meeting was that every hospital that cares for patients with acute stroke needs a stroke plan.

Prognosis of acute stroke

Neurology, 1987
We evaluated factors affecting mortality and quality of life in 1,013 patients with acute stroke followed for 2 to 8 years. In cerebral infarction, the major determinants for short-term mortality were impaired consciousness, leg weakness, and increasing age. The major determinants for long-term mortality were low level of activity at hospital discharge,

Imaging in acute stroke

European Radiology, 2005
Stroke is a syndrome characterized by a sudden neurological deficit caused by intracranial hemorrhage or ischemia. Computed tomography (CT) maintains a primary role in the evaluation of patients with acute stroke. The optimal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol in acute stroke includes diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to show acute ischemic ...

Inflammation and acute stroke

Current Opinion in Neurology, 1998
There are now overwhelming data suggesting that inflammation contributes to cerebral ischemic injury. The mechanisms that lead to the inflammatory response which follows stroke, however, are not fully understood. This review will highlight the most recent advances in our knowledge as well as the early experience of using anti-inflammatory strategies to

Imaging of acute stroke

Nature Reviews Neurology, 2010
Brain imaging provides an objective basis for the clinical inferences that direct individual patient management in the acute stroke setting. A brain CT or MRI scan is required for all patients with suspected stroke or transient ischemic attack. Thrombolytic therapy is arguably the most important aspect of acute stroke management; however, most ...

Thrombolysis for acute stroke

Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases, 1999
Thrombolysis for acute stroke is effective if administered according to the approved protocol. Since the initial report of success in 1995, a number of subsequent reports confirmed the safety and efficacy of this treatment. There is no particular subgroup of patients at increased likelihood of benefit or hemorrhage that can be identified at baseline ...
