Acyclic monoterpene primary alcohol:NADP+ oxidoreductase, a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of monoterpene alcohols in plants, is unstable and has been only poorly characterized. However we have established conditions which stabilize the enzyme from Rauwolfia serpentina cells, and then purified it to homogeneity.

Abstract NADP-linked acyclic monoterpene primary alcohol dehydrogenase from Rauwolfia serpentina cultured cells was found to catalyse the transfer of the pro-R hydrogen at C-4 of NADPH to neral, 10-oxogeraniol and 10-hydroxygeranial; intermediates for the biosynthesis of iridoids and non-tryptamine moieties of indole alkaloids.
