Evaluation of the Effects of Detomidine on Equine Myoelectrical Activity Using Electrointestinography

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the effects of detomidine on equine intestinal slow‐wave activity and frequency distribution measured by electrointestinography (EIG). Design Prospective, experimental study. Setting University teaching hospital. Animals A convenience sample of twelve 7‐ to 21‐year‐old clinically normal horses.

Organisational Resilience to Compound Events: Wildfire and the COVID‐19 Pandemic in the Sierra Nevada Region of California

open access: yesJournal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, Volume 33, Issue 2, June 2025.
ABSTRACT The years 2020 and 2021 mark the two largest wildfire seasons in recorded California state history and the start of the COVID‐19 pandemic. This article employs the resilience as meta‐capability framework in the study of small‐ and medium‐sized enterprise (SME) response to and recovery from these compound events in the Sierra Nevada region of ...

Catching ‘the bug’: Investigating insects through school‐based citizen science increases intentions for environmental activities in students and teachers

open access: yesAustral Entomology, Volume 64, Issue 2, May 2025.
Abstract School‐based citizen science projects facilitate authentic scientific interactions between research and educational institutions while exposing students to scientific processes. Evidence is accruing that citizen science participation and activities can have positive impacts on students' environmental awareness and intentions for pro ...

Noseband type and tightness level affect pressure on the horse's face at trot

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, Volume 57, Issue 3, Page 774-788, May 2025.
Abstract Background Poor noseband adjustment could create high pressures that may risk pain or tissue damage. Objectives To quantify sub‐noseband pressures dorsally over the nasal bone and ventrally over the mandibular rami for a Cavesson, Swedish (crank), Drop and Flash noseband at five tightness levels (2.0 to 0.0 finger equivalents). Study design In

Maternal Adiponectin Decreases Placenta Nutrient Transport in Mice

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 39, Issue 8, 30 April 2025.
The schematic illustrates the impact of adiponectin in placental function and fetal growth in obese pregnant mice. Adiponectin influences the placenta, by phosphorylation of mTOR at Ser2448 which alters its activity. This results in reduced nutrient influx (red arrows) to the fetus, ultimately contributing to fetal growth restriction.

Generation of Site‐Specifically Labeled Affinity Reagents via Use of a Self‐Labeling Single Domain Antibody

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 14, April 10, 2025.
Several methods have been used to label antibodies to facilitate visualization of cognate targets. Here, we leverage a new variety of conjugation chemistry, based on a crosslinking nanobody, to label target‐specific nanobody constructs with functionalities of choice.

Quantification of perforant path fibers for early detection of Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 21, Issue 4, April 2025.
Abstract INTRODUCTION The entorhinal cortex (ERC) and perforant path (PP) fibers are critical structures in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aims to explore these regions using high‐field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with the goal of identifying reliable biomarkers based on histopathological observations.

Effects of Road Interactions on Mate‐Searching Movements and Mate Location Success in an Imperiled Pit Viper (Crotalus horridus)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Our study aimed to provide additional evidence for sub‐lethal effects of roadways on animal behavior. In this case, we found strong support for increased road interactions by males during mating seasons and the possibility of reduced mate searching efficiency by those males interacting with roads that warrants future investigation.

Factors influencing community engagement approaches used in Aedes aegypti management in Cairns, Australia

open access: yesHealth Promotion Journal of Australia, Volume 36, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Issue Addressed An important part of preventing and managing Aedes‐borne mosquito disease outbreak risk is engaging the community. Research shows that high‐income countries tend to use top‐down measures for Aedes mosquito management, favouring educational approaches to engage the community over participatory approaches that actively involve ...
