Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Adaptive Protection Scheme for Active Distribution Networks Under Two-Phase Short-Circuit Faults Based on Integrated Sequence Components

open access: yesEnergies
The widespread integration of inverter-based distributed generators (IIDGs) severely limits the adaptability of conventional three-step overcurrent protection in distribution networks (DNs).

Spatially explicit groundwater vulnerability assessment to support the implementation of the Water Framework Directive – a practical approach with stakeholders [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The main objective of the study presented in this paper was to develop an evaluation scheme which is suitable for spatially explicit groundwater vulnerability assessment according to the Water Framework Directive (WFD).

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Method of dynamic trust assessment in Zero Trust Architecture based on explainable artificial intelligence

open access: yesÌнформаційні технології та компʼютерна інженерія
The transformation of contemporary corporate IT infrastructures has rendered conventional cybersecurity models ineffective, prompting a shift to the Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA); however, its practical implementation is complicated by a rigid reliance ...

MicroRNA regulation of CD8+ T cell responses. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short noncoding RNAs that play critical roles in the regulation of a broad range of biological processes. Like transcription factors, miRNAs exert their effects by modulating the expression of networks of genes that ...
