Saturation in cascaded optical amplifier free-space optical communication systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The performance of a free-space optical (FSO) communication system in a turbulent atmosphere employing an optical amplifier (OA) cascade to extend reach is investigated.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Adaptive multiresolution schemes with local time stepping for two-dimensional degenerate reaction-diffusion systems

open access: yes, 2008
We present a fully adaptive multiresolution scheme for spatially two-dimensional, possibly degenerate reaction-diffusion systems, focusing on combustion models and models of pattern formation and chemotaxis in mathematical biology.

Fast estimation of false alarm probabilities of STAP detectors - the AMF [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This paper describes an attempt to harness the power of adaptive importance sampling techniques for estimating false alarm probabilities of detectors that use space-time adaptive processing.

Semi-Supervised Change Detection with Data Augmentation and Adaptive Thresholding for High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Change detection (CD) is an important research direction in the field of remote sensing, which aims to analyze the changes in the same area over different periods and is widely used in urban planning and environmental protection.

Adaptive Wavelet Based MRI Brain Image De-noising

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2020
This paper presents a unique approach for wavelet-based MRI brain image de-noising. Adaptive soft and hard threshold functions are first proposed to improve the results of standard soft and hard threshold functions for image de-noising in the wavelet ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Principal component analysis and perturbation theory–based robust damage detection of multifunctional aircraft structure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A fundamental problem in structural damage detection is to define an efficient feature to calculate a damage index. Furthermore, due to perturbations from various sources, we also need to define a rigorous threshold whose overtaking indicates the ...

Drowsiness Detection in Drivers Using Facial Feature Analysis

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Drowsiness has been recognized as a leading factor in road accidents worldwide. Despite considerable research in this area, this paper aims to improve the precision of drowsiness detection specifically for long-haul travel by employing the Dlib-based ...

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...
