Response of steel chimneys with added damping
Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1983Abstract A theoretical analysis shows that for a large class of steel chimney designs a resilient damping layer at the base can help to achieve a sufficiently high overall damping level to inhibit significant vortex-induced vibrations. Corresponding full-scale experiments show close agreement with theory and that the system damping level can be ...

Optomechanical cooling without added damping
Frontiers in Optics 2017, 2017We demonstrate optomechanical cooling without added damping in a whispering gallery mode resonator by means of disorder-induced scattering. The phenomenon results from a reduction of thermal loading such that it eventually induces chirality of phonons.

Hydrodynamic Damping and Added Mass of Modern Screw Propellers
Volume 7B: Ocean Engineering, 2017The operation of ships with “slow-steaming” poses new problems for the torsional vibration analysis of the drive train. It is well known that the propeller determines the essential part of the mass moment of inertia and the system damping. Both values are determined during the initial design phase by semi-empirical methods with have originally been ...

On the Relationship Between Added Mass and Added Damping
5th International Symposium on Fluid Structure Interaction, Aeroelasticity, and Flow Induced Vibration and Noise, 2002A surprising relationship exists between the amplitude and phase of a vibrating system. For an item vibrating in a fluid flow the phase of the fluid pressure (relative to the motion of the structure) can be deduced from the amplitude of the pressure. This strong dependence of the phase on the amplitude provides a means for checking the correctness of ...

Added Mass, Added Stiffness and Added Damping Coefficients for a Parallel Plate-Type Structure
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011Flow-induced vibrations of parallel plates in axial viscous flow were studied. Viscous flow theory was applied to describe the fluid-structure interaction. The fluid was supposed to be two-dimensional. The expressions of fluid velocities were created. The pressure grads were gotten with two-dimensional Navier-Stocks equations.

Damping added to floors by seated crowds of people
SPIE Proceedings, 2006Floor damping is an essential parameter in the evaluation of the dynamic performance of a floor as the amount of floor damping has a significant impact on floor vibration levels. This paper explores the not well understood relationship between floor damping and seated crowds of people.

Added mass and damping of a sphere section in heave
Applied Ocean Research, 1984Abstract The Norwegian wave-power buoy 1 consists of a half-immersed floating sphere which is open to the sea at the bottom end. It is a two degree-of-freedom device involving the independent motion of the outer rigid sphere and the pressure across the internal free surface.
