Added Mass and Damping of a TLP Column Model

Offshore Technology Conference, 1990
SUMMARY The Tension Leg Platform (TLP) typically has a very high natural frequency in vertical (heave) motion. While the wave energy is quite small near this natural period of 2 to 4 seconds, the nonlinear forces can introduce excitation at the natural frequency, giving rise to large tendon loads. This phenomenon is

Added Mass and Damping Estimates for Vibrating Propellers

SNAME Propellers '81 Symposium, 1981
A general analysis of the added mass and damping of a marine propeller in all rigid body modes of rigid body, vibration is presented. This derivation assumes that the pressure distribution on a propeller blade due to a unit heave oscillation or unit pitch oscillation about the midchord point is available.

Response to wind of a model chimney with added damping

Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 1984
AbstractSome ad hoc studies are reported which investigated the use of added damping layers at the base of a wind‐tunnel model of a chimney as a means of increasing its overall structural damping. Significant increases in the logarithmic decrement were obtained from decaying free‐vibration tests and in subsequent wind‐tunnel tests corresponding ...

Numerical analysis of added mass and damping of elastic hydrofoils

Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2020
A numerical model is proposed for analyzing the effects of added mass and damping on the dynamic behaviors of hydrofoils. Strongly coupled fluid-structure interactions (FSIs) of hydrofoils are analyzed by using the 3-D panel method for the fluid and the finite element method for the hydrofoils.

Increasing the Impedance Range of a Haptic Display by Adding Electrical Damping

First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems, 2005
This work examines electrical damping as a means for improving haptic display performance. Specifically, electrical damping, like its mechanical counterpart, can significantly reduce the occurrences of limit cycle oscillations at high impedance boundaries in virtual environments.

Comparison of Methods for Computing Equivalent Viscous Damping Ratios of Structures with Added Viscous Damping

Journal of Structural Engineering, 2008
Three analysis methods are compared for determining the equivalent viscous damping ratios in a simple one-story, one-bay system with three different added damping configurations. The analysis methods are modal strain energy using the undamped mode shapes, free vibration log decrement, and complex eigenvalue-eigenvector analysis.

The optimum simulation method for added damping and stiffness device

Journal of Information and Optimization Sciences, 2004
Fine ductility, larger cycle of low cycle fatigue and the ability of higher rate of strain hardening are the advantages of low yielding steel (LYS), It is used to develop a new seismic resistance device of added damping and stiffness. To overcome the local fracture problem on steel plate, a newly designed rhombic type steel plate with low yielding ...

Proportional damping approximation for structures with added viscoelastic dampers

Finite Elements in Analysis and Design, 2006
Installation of viscoelastic dampers in structures is one of the most widely used ways of enhancing structural performance against dynamic loads. Finite element dynamic analysis of structures with added viscoelastic dampers can be computationally costly.

Variation of Heave Added Mass and Damping Near Seabed

29th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering: Volume 1, 2010
During installation of subsea structures such as mud mats, the tension in crane wires can experience spikes when the structure is near the seabed. It is hypothesized that such spikes may be caused by the structure undergoing resonant oscillations, which in turn may be due to changes in added mass and damping near the seabed.

Experimental determination of damping added mass and added mass moment of inertia of a shipmodel1

International Shipbuilding Progress, 1957
The damping, added mass and mass moment of inertia of a shipmodel, performing forced heaving or pitching oscillations in calm water, are determined experimentally. The influence of model speed, amplitude and frequency of the motions on these quantities has been studied.
