The added mass forces in insect flapping wings
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2018The added mass forces of three-dimensional (3D) flapping wings of some representative insects, and the accuracy of the often used simple two-dimensional (2D) method, are studied. The added mass force of a flapping wing is calculated by both 3D and 2D methods, and the total aerodynamic force of the wing is calculated by the CFD method.

The added mass of an expanding bubble
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2003The added mass interaction of a body of variable volume translating in a fluid depends not only on the relative acceleration, but also on the rate of change of the volume. In the present study this prediction is put to an experimental test by observing the motion of a bubble rising in a pressurized tube.

The added mass of a spherical projectile
American Journal of Physics, 2011When a ball moves through the air, the air exerts a force on the ball. For a sphere moving at constant velocity with respect to the air, this force is called the drag force and it has been well measured. If the sphere moves with a nonconstant velocity there are additional forces.

The added mass of confocal ellipsoids
International Shipbuilding Progress, 1981The available analytical solutions for the acceleration coefficients and for the potential flow around ellipsoids or spheroids immersed in fluid that is either infinite in extent or is bounded by a confocal ellipsoid surface are summarized. In particular the solutions for a rotating inner ellipsoid in the presence of a fixed outer confocal ellipsoid ...

Added-mass force in dry granular matter
Physical Review E, 2022From two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations of the motion of a circular intruder into a dry granular packing, we provide evidence for a specific force term in the case of unsteady motion in addition to the force corresponding to a steady motion. We show that this additional term is proportional to the acceleration of the intruder relative to the ...

On the Relationship Between Added Mass and Added Damping
5th International Symposium on Fluid Structure Interaction, Aeroelasticity, and Flow Induced Vibration and Noise, 2002A surprising relationship exists between the amplitude and phase of a vibrating system. For an item vibrating in a fluid flow the phase of the fluid pressure (relative to the motion of the structure) can be deduced from the amplitude of the pressure. This strong dependence of the phase on the amplitude provides a means for checking the correctness of ...

Through laboratory investigation, it is shown that when a pile group is arranged in a cluster, the added mass (or inertial force) increases sharply after the spacing between piles falls below a certain critical value. Two configurations of pile group arrangement—circular and square shapes of approximately the same base diameter—were tested.
