Dynamic shear band propagation and micro-structure of adiabatic shear band

Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 2001
A meshfree Galerkin approximation, reproducing kernel particle method, is used in the displacement-based explicit formulation to simulate dynamic shear band propagation as well as microstructures of adiabatic shear bands. The main advantages of using meshfree interpolants are two: (i) it can effectively avoid mesh-alignment sensitivity that finite ...

Adiabatic shear bands in steel

International Journal of Fracture Mechanics, 1970
Abstract : Bands of intense shear have been reported in steels which have been subjected to a high strain rate. It was proposed that these bands were caused by unstable adiabatic shear; that the rate of thermal softening (as heat is generated locally by plastic work) is greater than the rate of work hardening of the metal.

Adiabatic Shear Banding in Plane Strain Problems

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1989
Plane strain thermomechanical deformations of a viscoplastic body are studied with the objective of analyzing the localization of deformation into narrow bands of intense straining. Two different loadings, namely, the top and bottom surfaces subjected to a prescribed tangential velocity, and these two surfaces subjected to a preassigned normal velocity,

Geometrical imperfection and adiabatic shear banding

International Journal of Impact Engineering, 2008
Abstract This work addresses the effect of small geometrical imperfections on adiabatic shear band (ASB) formation. The separate effect of the length and radius of short notches is systematically investigated in AM50 and Ti6Al4V alloys, using shear compression specimens.

Dissipation in adiabatic shear bands

Mechanics of Materials, 1994
Abstract In the present study of adiabatic shear banding in metals, the region of interest is modelled as a two-material two-temperature body. Specific material laws governing thermoviscous plasticity and heat transfer are ascribed to the shear-band zone.

On stress collapse in adiabatic shear bands

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1987
Abstract T he dynamics of adiabatic shear band formation is considered making use of a simplified thermo/visco/plastic flow law. A new numerical solution is used to follow the growth of a perturbation from initiation, through early growth and severe localization, to a slowly varying terminal configuration.
