Modelling of Formation of Adiabatic Shear Bands

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
Adiabatic shear bands are microstructural features that appear when metals, and some non-metals are subjected to impact loading at strain rates in excess of 103 s-1 and large strains. The formation of these bands is generally attributed to several competing mechanisms, among them is an initial strain hardening followed by adiabatic thermal softening ...

The Initiation and Growth of Adiabatic Shear Bands

International Journal of Plasticity, 1985
Abstract A simple version of thermo/viscoplasticity theory is used to model the formation of adiabatic shear bands in high rate deformation of solids. The one dimensional shearing deformation of a finite slab is considered. For the constitutive assumptions made in this paper, homogeneous shearing produces a stress/strain response curve that always ...

Dynamic recrystallisation in adiabatic shear bands

Le Journal de Physique IV, 2000
An XC18 steel material in bcc structure was deformed in double shear with a Hopkinson bar at a projectile speed of 97 m/s With the help of micrographs, the local shear strain distributions have been examined The EBSP technique was used to measure the orientation of the grains from which the orientation distribution function (ODF) was constructed.

Microstructure of adiabatic shear bands in Ti6Al4V

Materials Characterization, 2013
Abstract Microstructural deformation mechanisms in adiabatic shear bands in Ti6Al4V are studied using traditional TEM and selected area diffraction, and more advanced microstructural characterisation techniques such as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high angle annular dark field STEM and conical dark field TEM.

Adiabatic shear banding in a bimetallic body

Acta Mechanica, 1989
Thermomechanical deformations of a body made of two different materials and under-going simple shearing deformations are studied with the objectives of finding out when and where adiabatic shear bands will initiate and how they will subsequently grow. Each material is modeled as strain and strain-rate hardening but thermally softening.

Numerical modeling of the propagation of an adiabatic shear band

Metallurgical Transactions A, 1986
The critical phenomena determining the propagation of an adiabatic shear band occur at its extremity. The stress and strain distributions at the tip of a shear band are calculated as a function of applied shear strain using the finite element method for an elasto-plastic material.
