Adjoint variable method for time‐harmonic Maxwell equations [PDF]

open access: yesCOMPEL - The international journal for computation and mathematics in electrical and electronic engineering, 2009
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study the optimization problem of low‐frequency magnetic shielding using the adjoint variable method (AVM). This method is compared with conventional methods to calculate the gradient.Design/methodology/approachThe equation for the vector potential (eddy currents model) in appropriate Sobolev spaces is studied to ...

Adjoint variable method for two-dimensional plasmonic structures

Optics Letters, 2012
We present, for the first time, an adjoint variable method (AVM) for wideband sensitivity analysis of dispersive materials. The time domain transmission line modeling technique is exploited to calculate the response and its sensitivities with respect to all the designable parameters using at most one extra simulation.

Adjoint Variable Method Combined with Complex Variable for Structural Design Sensitivity

Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers A, 2009
Abstract The adjoint variable method can reduce computation time and save computer resources because it can selectively provide the sensitivity information for the positions that designers wish to measure. However, the adjoint variable method commonly employs exact analytical differentiation with respect to the design variables. It can be cumbersome to

An Adjoint Variable Method for Sensitivity Calculations of Multiport Devices

IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2004
Recently, an adjoint variable method (AVM) for sensitivity calculations has been proposed for use with the method of moments solvers. In this paper, we extend this method to be suitable for application to multiport devices. The target objective function is usually represented in terms of the device's S-parameters.

An adjoint variable method for sensitivity analysis of non‐linear elastic systems

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1991
AbstractAn adjoint variable method for design sensitivity analysis of non‐linear elastic systems is presented. The method uses domain parameterization and a mutual form of the Hu‐Washizu energy principle, and extends results reported in a recent work for linear elastic systems to non‐linear elasticity. Non‐linearities due to finite deformations and non‐

COMPARISON OF DIRECT DIFFERENTIATION AND ADJOINT VARIABLE METHOD FOR ELECTRICAL IMPEDANCE IMAGING

COMPEL - The international journal for computation and mathematics in electrical and electronic engineering, 1993
In the shadow of X‐ray tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance tomography a new tomographic technique based on low‐frequency electric currents has been successfully developed in the past decade. Impedance computed tomography (ICT), although it gives poor spatial resolution images, is unmatched in certain cases.

Shape sensitivity analysis of piezoelectric structures by the adjoint variable method

AIAA Journal, 1990
Shape sensitivity expressions are derived for linear piezoelectric structures with coupled mechanical and elastic fields. By adopting the quasielectrostatic approximation for these inherently anisotropic materials, the adjoint variable method of optimization and the material derivative formulation of shape variations are used in a systematic procedure ...
