Statistical evaluation of performance impact of manufacturing variability by an adjoint method
Aerospace Science and Technology, 2018Abstract Statistical evaluations of the aerodynamic performance changes due to the manufacturing variability for a turbine blade using the first order (FO) and second order (SO) sensitivities are presented in the paper. On the premise that the geometric variation at each scanning point on the blade meets a standard normal distribution, a modeling ...

A Discrete Adjoint Variable Method for Printed-Circuit Board Computer-Aided Design
INFORMS Journal on Computing, 2006We propose an adjoint-variable method for design sensitivity analysis of printed circuits and antennas where allowable perturbations in the design parameters are of a discrete type. We extend previous work on the sensitivity analysis of waveguide structures, where changes in the design parameters are stepwise, on-grid volumetric perturbations.

BPM Based Efficient Sensitivity Analysis Exploiting the Adjoint Variable Method
Integrated Photonics and Nanophotonics Research and Applications / Slow and Fast Light, 2007An adjoint variable method is proposed for efficient sensitivity analysis using BPM. The computational cost of estimating the gradient is less than one extra BPM simulation. The obtained sensitivities match well the accurate central differences.

Advances in the Adjoint Variable Method for Time-Domain Transmission Line Modeling
IEEE/ACES International Conference on Wireless Communications and Applied Computational Electromagnetics, 2005., 2005In this paper, we review recent advances in the adjoint variable method (AVM) technique for time-domain transmission-line modeling (TLM). The AVM theory is applied to estimate objective function sensitivities with respect to designable dimensions of dielectric discontinuities. Using only two simulations, the sensitivities with respect to all designable

Shape Optimization Using an Adjoint Variable Method in ITBL Grid Environment
Volume 4: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Neutronics Methods and Coupled Codes; Student Paper Competition, 2006To decrease the fluid drag force on the surface of a specified object subjected to an unsteady flow, under a constant volume condition, the adjoint variable method is formulated by using FEM. Based on the Lagrange multiplier method (a conditional variational principle), this method consists of the state equation, the adjoint equation and the ...

An adjoint variable method for design sensitivity analysis of elastoplastic structures
KSME International Journal, 1999Design sensitivity analysis of structural problems obeying an elastoplastic material behavior is developed using adjoint variable method. An elastoplastic constitutive equation with yield surface and kinematic hardening is considered to describe the material behavior.

An adjoint variable method for frequency domain TLM problems with conducting boundaries
IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters, 2003We propose a novel adjoint variable approach to design sensitivity analysis with the frequency domain transmission line modeling (FDTLM) method. An enlarged system matrix is constructed that includes the perturbed metal sections of the structure. The adjoint system of equations is then formed and solved. The derivatives of the responses with respect to

The adjoint variable method for frequency-independent constitutive parameters
2017In this chapter, we show how adjoint sensitivity analysis techniques can be applied to computational electromagnetics problems. We focus in this chapter on linear, isotropic, and nondispersive electromagnetic structures. In this case, the properties of all materials in the computational domain do not depend on the field magnitude, the excitation ...
