최근 기업환경을 둘러싼 빠른 변화에 따라 조직들은 수평적 구도로 개편하면서 팀 단위 중심의 조직 운영이 증가하고 있다. 비서의 역할도 한 사람에게 소속된 단순한 보좌 역할에 더하여 팀장과 팀원을 함께 보좌하고 팀 고유의 업무를 수행하는 겸무형 팀 비서의 숫자가 크게 증가하고 있다. 이러한 조직 환경에 적극적으로 대응할 수 있는 역량을 가진 팀비서를 필요로 한다.
