Iloperidone treatment mitigates the Juvenile Huntington's Disease phenotype possibly via Sigma‐1 Receptor Modulation

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
We investigated the potential of iloperidone as an activator of Sigma‐1 receptor (S1R) neuroprotective function in juvenile Huntington's disease (jHD). We tested iloperidone on cortical neurons differentiated from patient‐derived iPSCs, demonstrating that it acts as a S1R agonist, decreasing apoptosis, huntingtin aggregation, and oxidative stress ...

The Interactions Between Acetylcholine and T‐Cells and Their Role in the Immune System: A Scoping Review

open access: yesImmunology, EarlyView.
Activated T‐cells instigate signalling events leading to the activation of transcription factors, which in turn, act on the nucleus to produce cytokines. We postulate that c‐fos is one of these transcription factors which upregulates the choline acetyltransferase gene responsible for synthesising acetylcholine (ACh).

Innovations in Obesity Treatment: Beyond Adipose Tissue Dysfunction

open access: yesObesity Reviews, EarlyView.
Obesity drives chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cancer development through adipocyte dysfunction. Addressing this multisystemic disorder requires integrated strategies beyond diet and exercise, such as thermogenesis activation via menthol or capsinoids and appetite control through GLP‐1/GIP agonists and neuromodulation to ...

Targeting Overweight and Obesity Phenotypes for Secondary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: A Call to Action for the Middle East and Beyond

open access: yesObesity Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Although there are conflicting clinical data on the efficacy of weight reduction in reducing secondary events in patients with comorbid overweight and obesity (OAO) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), there is excellent epidemiological and biological evidence of a cause–effect relationship between OAO, CVD, and other systemic complications ...

Ion Channel Dysfunction and Therapeutic Targeting in Salivary Gland Disorders

open access: yesOral Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia represent major clinical complications of radiation therapy, autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren's disease, and inherited epithelial ion transport defects. This review integrates current knowledge on ion channel dysfunction as a central mechanistic driver of salivary gland pathology and ...
