Arithmetic learning in advanced age

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2018
Acquisition of numerical knowledge and understanding of numerical information are crucial for coping with the changing demands of our digital society. In this study, we assessed arithmetic learning in older and younger individuals in a training experiment including brain imaging.

Representation of Sickle Cell Disease Patients in Pediatric and Adult Care: What We Discovered Using Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside (i2b2) Data

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Transitioning from pediatric to adult care is a high‐risk period for individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). An initial observation at one academic medical center suggested a sex‐based disparity in clinic populations, prompting a national investigation.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Insomnia severity and daytime sleepiness in caregivers of advanced age

open access: yesFrontiers in Sleep
ObjectiveAging-related changes and caregiver burden may increase the risk for sleep disturbances among older caregivers, yet few studies have examined the prevalence of insomnia and daytime sleepiness in this group.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

In Vitro Fertilization Outcomes in Donor Oocyte Cycles Compared to the Autologous Cycles in the Poseidon 4 Group of Poor Ovarian Responders

open access: yesMedicina
Background and Objectives: POSEIDON 4 (P4) patients face the most adverse outcomes among poor responders. Oocyte donation has overcome unsatisfactory live birth rates (LBRs) in P4 patients and has become an indispensable approach.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.
